.... Is the big day! Alfie is going in for cataract surgery. I'm super excited, totally terrified and a nervous wreck all at the same time. I have to take him in Tuesday evening and won't be allowed to collect him until Friday morning! It'll be horrible without him. Having had today's appointment at the AHT though, I'm pretty sure I am doing the right thing. They also found Alfie has a cyst in his eye which would cause a build up of pressure resulting in glaucoma eventually anyway, so they said they can drain that at the same time. His retinas are working fine and the opthmalogist is confident he will regain good vision afterwards. As his cataracts are advanced they will apparently be very hard, which increases the risk of scar tissue and post-op inflammation but they said they have had very good results with dogs who had been much more advanced than Alfie. He has started on steroid and anti-inflammatory eye drops today in preparation... exciting times ahead

Oh that's great, the news from AHT is really promising barley, even though from Tuesday until Friday you will be a nervous wreck. We'll all be thinking of you two during that time

Great news, and a bonus that they found the cyst before causing any more damage, and are able to drain it at the same time. You must be a bundle of nerves right now, I know I would be.

Well it turns out the big day will actually be Monday!!
The AHT just rang and my heart virtually stopped when I saw their number!! They said they would only call if there was an issue with his blood tests that would prevent surgery!!! Cue major panic.
But all was fine with blood tests thank god! They just asked if I would mind moving surgery date as they have a case coming from Belgium (I think they said?!) on Tuesday and would I mind moving slots. I'm only an hour away so not bother to me. I'm taking him in Sunday lunch time now.
Probably works in my favour actually - less time to stew and Monday's are always manic at work, so will keep me busy!

Well that's fright number 1 (& I hope the only one) over barley. At least you know his blood tests are OK It sounds like the shift of day will work in your favour as regards not having time to worry although Sunday afternoon & evening you'll have time to miss him.

....although Sunday afternoon & evening you'll have time to miss him. You'll just have to get yourself on here and we'll keep you occupied We'll all have everything crossed for the brave wee man on Monday though I'm sure he'll sail through it all The hardest part will be keeping him from going after all the things he'll now be able to see with his new bionic eyes

Thanks all getting super nervous and second guessing myself now, Google isn't great in situations like this. Also when he went in for his lump removals, they called me as soon as he had come round to go and get him as he was howling the place down! I know the AHT are going to be so used to dogs like him, but still makes me worry, it's a long time to be away The FAQ sheet said no need to bring anything from home as bedding/food is provided. I am going to be one of those PITA fusspot owners though and send him with a little blanket (which I've had in my bed for a few nights to smell like me/home!) and his usual dry food for a bit of normality. And his slow feed bowl as he will choke otherwise. All this will probably just make me feel better, he probably doesn't even care! I messed up on the days though... if he goes in tomorrow, op Monday, it'll be Wednesday he should be able to come home, not Thursday. So that's a bit better!

((((((HUGE BIG CALMING HUGS)))))) Of course you're not a PITA Mum - we're ALL like that when it comes to our precious babies How could anyone who's not us POSSIBLY care for our little angels properly? Great idea about the blanket - I'll remember that for the future. The wee man will be home before you know it (((HUGS)))

Well he's there, I dropped him off this afternoon. Wow that was hard! He didn't want to go and the man I saw today wasn't as kind & gentle as the women we saw there during the week I'm sure he's good with the dogs, just made leaving him that bit harder! One of the nice ladies from in the week called about ten mins ago, said she's seen Alfie and given him a great big cuddle and he's doing ok. A little bit bewildered but has settled ok and eaten his tea - which I'm sure he has! Hell would freeze over before Alfie left a meal whether he's settled or not though is a different matter lol, I know what he's like when he is left at our usual vet and how people taking care of other people's animals often just say they're doing ok to stop the owner worrying! I do it myself in my job! But anyway, just got to trust that he's in good hands. They said that they couldn't get his catheter in (he was being "a bit grumpy" in their words!) so will leave that until this evening and then sedate him to do it, and he'll then sleep well for the night. They said they'll try and call again in the morning but if they don't, then to presume all is fine and they're just super busy. But will definitely call after the op. It's SO weird without him. I just made my packed lunch for work tomorrow and brushed all the crumbs off the worktop on to the floor! Then remembered and had to get the dustpan & brush out I'm nervous beyond words
