So pleased that Nutmeg is recovering well - how is your heart after all the worry meandmine ? that must have been such a long day waiting to hear how the op went. I should think that Thursday check-up is included in your bill. It' s been a rough couple of weeks with one thing and another so poor Nutmeg's problems have only been part of my life but I m sure I ll get through it. It wasn't too bad a day, as I ve said before , we have a brilliant vet practice. Originally we were told that she wouldn't go to theatre until 11.30 so there was no point in fretting too much until then. We had a phone call at 9.30 to say things had changed and they were just about to start on her. At 10.30 the vet concerned rang to say she was back 'in recovery' and absolutely fine. At 1.15 a vet nurse called to say Nutmeg was bright, alert and had eaten dinner and that we could collect her at 3.30. So.....being kept up to date throughout the day made it much easier to cope with. And now I ll leave the cat side of the forum alone and go back to the canine part.

Just a bit of a PS to the posts about the variation in dental operation costs. Nutmeg has now had three post op checks.....one specifically for her mouth and the other two for her heart problems and all were included in the original bill. As each consultation now costs just under £50.00 , the check ups have made quite a deduction from the bill. ( if that makes sense.)

Our vets charge £54.95 for consultations.

I don't know if any post op checks prices as he's only ever had a clean & polish so no need for any checks. I must admit that my consultations are cheaper though can't remember precisely but in the mid £30s (we have reduced rates for 2nd/3rd consultations on the same issue, even free if a follow up/review on a long term/chronic problem such as diabetes. I once asked the vet to charge me as I felt guilty about the number of free visits Roman & I were getting & that's when I found out the vet's principle! Obviously any blood tests etc are charged as normal.

There are some loving vets out there my vet was the same , not even been charged some times , last time l went his consults stat at £25 then same issue recalls a sliding scale. More than l can say about the oldest vets surgery in town 👎

A bit of a delayed up date!!
7/9/22 still having issues eating, looking a bit scruffy & thin. Saw head vet. As Osiris has reacted to Mirtazapine in the past (spaced out) he was restarted on Depomedrone (steroid) again.
30/9/22 Had his monthly Solensia & Depomedrone injections with head vet
1/11/22 Had his monthly Solensia & Depomedrone injections. Sadly not with the head vet who had collapsed the weekend Osiris saw him on Friday 30/9. The vet was found to have a brain tumour which was removed but would take time to recover including radio/chemotherapy.

3/11/22 Osiris back at the vets as he'd had a barny with another cat last night, not sure whether a neighbour's or another all black who passes through. Osiris's tail was hanging straight down (not tucked in as if afraid) In fact it was so straight down it was almost touching the ground when standing. He saw the son of the head vet, who had now joined the practice as his dad was ill to help out. He described Osiris's tail as flaccid, marked pain at first coccyx vertebrae with sacrum. Temperature was elevated at 39.4. As Osiris is diagnosed with early kidney disease & on steroids he couldn't have a Metacam. The vet prescribed antibiotics in case of any possible infection. The vet recognised that I was the owner of Roman who he'd all about from his dad while he was still doing his veterinary degree!! Roman was famous 8/11/22 well the vet was right about possible infection. although Osiris's tail had gradually recovered, he now had an abscess on the base of his tail so was back at the vets. When we got there the abscess had burst on the way at least the vet (same one as before) didn't have to lance it! Given another dose of long lasting antibiotics (Osiris is really difficult to pill!) Oh & keep Osiris in as it wound although cleaned was still open.

11/11/22 Osiris back to see same vet again as he'd developed another abscess (vet's description as half the size of a tennis ball!!!) It would need lancing & bearing in mind Osiris's need for sedation for taking bloods it was decided to keep him in & lance it under sedation. The vet also heard some noise on the chest so while sedated bloods would be taken to check how kidneys are doing & a chest x-ray to check the noise. When they cleaned the abscess they found some muscular trauma as well so that was all well cleaned & flushed with saline. He was given an antibiotic injection which would last the weekend & the vets ordered in Covenia (much longer lasting injection) His bloods showed that despite the potassium supplement his potassium levels had got worse but then Osiris's appetite was variable so may well not have been getting the required amount of supplement. It was suggested that although Osiris had a bad reaction to Mirtazapine it might be worth trying the transdermal gel version as this is not directly consumed (put on inside of ear) & dosing is more accurate. The decision was made to see how his appetite progressed but this was a definite option. However the good news was that his kidney values seem to be recovering )odd after almost 6 years of borderline kidney disease. His chest x-ray showed a possible interstitial pattern (don't ask what this is as I can't remember) but this could be just over interpreting, especially as I hadn't noticed any respiratory issues. Of course still keep in!! Poor Osiris's cleaned abscess 20221111_190947 by osiriscat, on Flickr 15/11/22 Osiris got his Covenia injection. The access was healing nicely & the vet was going to consult with a Dutch friend of his dad's, who was a specialist vet in this sort of area - he'd been consulted back in the earlier days of Roman's unstable diabetes.

I think it's trial and error with Osiris's medication at the moment tonib. Good news that his kidney condition is ok at the moment.I hope the abscess goes away soon.
