Osiris'arthritis is slowly getting worse, stiffer & not jumping up so easily.
He no longer has a NSAID to ease it due to his blood tests last year indicating he's changed from being borderline not having kidney disease to having it & Metacam etc. is contra indicated for cats with kidney disease. He was having occasional inappetence - although I think that's more to do with being fussy. We tried Mirtazapine to improve his appetite/ possible nausea but he reacted badly to that so he was given steroid pills (Medrone) for both arthritis pain & inappetence. However Osiris is very difficult to pill at home so he was changed to a monthly injection instead.
As his arthritis is getting worse the vet suggested giving him Solensia which is the latest drug for dealing with pain from osteoarthritis & is a monthly injection, its the feline equivalent of Librela which I think scruffsmaz's dog Alfie was having. This was the drug that Roman did start just before his demise. Although Roman's 1st dose was just before his turn for the worse at the end of June I am fairly confident that there was no connection.
When Osiris had his first Solensia injection at the end of June he'd already had his steroid injection but when we saw the vet for his 2nd one at the end of July the vet initially suggested we don't give him the steroid as the Solensia seemed to be doing its job but in the end we agreed on a reduced dose of it as it could also help if there is any pain/inflammation with Osiris's teeth/gums which could be affecting his eating.
Osiris had gingivitis when we first got him at just under 2 in 2008 and later was having almost yearly dental scale & polishes but what with covid, his age (16 last April 1st) & kidney disease raising the risk factors of anaesthesia his last ones were Feb 2018, July 2019 & April 2021. His gums aren't too bad but his teeth are definitely showing tartar.
At this month's appointment on Friday (26th) he got his 3rd Solensia injection & we had a good discussion about Osiris's issues and we came up with a plan.
He's booked in for this coming Friday 2nd September for blood tests (which will mean sedation) & depending on the results he will have a dental op under general anaesthetic. In view of this I suggested he wasn't given his steroid injection that day in case he needed anything after his dental op for pain etc. & we make a decision about continuing with it or not when we see what the blood test & if the dental improved his eating.
So it looks like there will be 2 of us lotsofcats waiting to hear that a dental has gone Ok on Friday
