Whilst there, the vet gave his eyes a check to see how his dry eye was doing and commented on how advance his cataracts are now. He then went and said "oooh they're perfect to be removed now" - I asked what he meant and he said they were large & mature and could be easily removed. It's planted a seed in my brain!!! What if Alfie could get his eyesight back?! It's not covered by my insurance (hence never having it done before) but I could talk to my parents.
Omg almost wish he hadn't of said it!

Oh that's put you in an awful position if your insurance doesn't cover it barley,it's very expensive.A couple I see sometimes in the village had their Border Terriers cataracts done.I think their insurance covered it or some of it,I will ask when I next see them,or your vet will know the cost.On top of the opp costs were hotel costs as they had to travel to Penrith from Scarborough for it doing, then back again for check up.Its worked very well though,so worth it if funds are available. Are you sure it wouldn't be covered?

There is something in back of mind from something a friend said after her dog had multiple GA's, that you need to take care how many GA a dog has over short period of time! It might therefore be worth questioning risks with vets before making the decision to have his eyes done. Have you discussed that Alfie has had it a bit rough ride after the GA he has had? Would be fabulous if he could have his eyes done

It definitely isn't covered unfortunately, he had them before I took out insurance and it's printed on his insurance documents as an exclusion (along with skin complaints, great when you have a Westie! But goes to show the importance of insurance from the get-go). My vet said "it's a wonder op if you have a couple of grand". I kinda laughed and shrugged it off as a) I don't have a couple of grand and b) I've always thought it was a big op for a little dog. I said isn't he too old? Vet said no definitely not, he would be in & out the Animal Health Trust in a day. To be truthful, it's become apparent over the past month or so that he's loosing his hearing too. I can't do anything about that. The thought of him being deaf & blind is too much to think about really, that's no life IMO. But I may be able to help his eyesight? I just keep thinking that eyes aside, now we have hopefully got over the lumps, he's a really healthy fit little dog. He isn't overweight, he has no arthritis whatsoever - I think the thing that ages him so much is his eyes. alfiemummy will confirm from our walks, Alfie is happy to walk miles but has lost his zest in places he doesn't know. He's slow & cautious to the point he looses enthusiasm. I think my first port of call is to ring AHT in the morning for a guide price. Then book an apt to properly talk things through with my vet to get all the info. Then approach the parents...
