Alfie had a little lump on his head which he had removed the Friday before last. He'd had it a month or so, and it was a like a little cyst - it would fill up with gunk, he'd scratch it and make it empty, and then it'd fill up again. The vet said it was probably itchy for him and likely to get infected if it kept happening, so was best to remove it. It was only the size of a pea (infact probably even smaller). My vet was so sure it was a cyst, he said it wasn't even worth sending it away for testing. However, he said that since Alfie is insured, then we may well do so anyway just to make absolutely certain. We went to get his stitches out on Monday just gone and the lab results were back. Unfortunately it wasn't a cyst, it was a sebaceous carcinoma which is a malignant tumour of the sebaceous gland. My vet had never even seen one before and the only info he had on it was the stuff written on the lab report! That said it was unlikely to spread to elsewhere in the body, but was aggressive locally. My vet was confident he'd removed a wide enough margain though, and said to just keep a super close eye out for any more lumps. Well, I found one last night! It's on the centre of his back, about two inches or so from the base of his tail. It feels quite hard and smooth and I can move it around easily. It's not like the one that was on his head, this one is totally under the skin. It's so small that when I loose it, I have to hunt around for ages to find it again. Proper scared though We're at the vets at 5.30 to get it checked out. Need lots of good vibes for my boy please.

Oh no! So sorry to hear that barley. Me and samson will keep our fingers and paws crossed for you and Alfie. Hopefully it has been spotted early enough so that it hasn't spread. Good luck at the vets later, let us know what happens x

Oh no! Sending well wishes your way Alfie and barleyHopefully if it's different to the one he had on his head then maybe this time it really is just a cyst? Fingers crossed! It sounds like the lump my Alfie has on the inside of his leg, about the size of a bean, easily movable, firm and completely under the skin. Never caused him any trouble!

Sorry to hear this barley. Hope it turns out to be nothing significant. Sending you and Alfie a really Big Hug. Will you have it removed whatever the outcome of the vet appointment for your peace of mind? Gypsy has a lump on her chest that is about a size of a small pea, when I lose that I can not find it again for ages. Vet implied fatty lump and told me not to worry unless it grew a lot. Now thinking perhaps I should be getting more worried than I am!

Your Alfie's lump sounds exactly like this new one on Alfie's back, so yes, fingers crossed! Sending lots of good vibes your way for Alfie. Good luck at the vets. Gypsy has a lump on her chest that is about a size of a small pea, when I lose that I can not find it again for ages. Vet implied fatty lump and told me not to worry unless it grew a lot. Now thinking perhaps I should be getting more worried than I am! I was thinking about that. If I don't have it removed, I think I will constantly be checking it and worrying. But then again, I don't really want him to have another GA so soon. Anyway, we went to the vets this evening. He gave it a good feel for ages and then said, I'm sure it's a cyst. I said yes, you said that with the malignant one! He said if he felt it on any other dog, he would say leave and monitor but as Alfie has just had this nasty lump, that it's sensible just to double check. He took some cells out of it with a syringe, smeared it on a slide and will send away for testing - the results will be back Thursday next week. He said there is a good chance the results will come back inconclusive but we'll have to wait and see. I had more chance to talk about the malignant lump as I was a bit shell shocked on Monday and didn't really know what to say. I had read online (the worst thing to do, I know!) that sebaceous carcinomas can spread to the lymph nodes. The vet said that since the lump was on Alfie's head, it would have been the lymph nodes in Alfie's throat and around his front legs that it would have infected, and upon examining them, said they were absolutely fine. He also said that since his blood results before the GA were absolutely perfect, that I shouldn't be worrying as anything out of the ordinary with lymph nodes, or anywhere else really, would have shown up on there. I also said I had read it can spread to the lungs! And he said pretty much no chance to that with Alfie as he has no wheezing, coughing, is coping with exercise fine etc. He showed me the lab report and talked me through it. It said that the chances of a sebaceous gland tumor being malignant is less than 0.2%, so well done Alfie Westies, Cockers, Siberian Huskies and Scottish Terriers are apparently four breeds who seem to be more prone to them. The report also said that spreading is ''extremely unlikely'' and surgery is usually curative unless in extremely advanced stages (Alfie's lump was less than pea sized and not ulcerated or anything). So all in all, I think I just need to relax a bit! Well, I will when the outcome of the current lump is decided!

Sorry to hear about the second lump barley! If it's any comfort, it sounds much like the lump I found on Ellie's chest a few weeks back. Because it was easily moveable and everything, when I took her to the vets, the vet pretty much echoed my thoughts - a sub cutaneous fatty lump. She did aspirate it, but broke the slide when she was transferring what she'd taken from it so it never got tested. However, she was very certain that it was only a fatty lump and that we should just keep an eye on it and if it got any bigger, go back. Hopefully the results for Alfie's lump will be similar!

just caught up on this barley. Hope the 2nd lump's test prove the vets diagnosis & is fine. Your vet was really good spending the time to clarify all the results, 0.2% risk & its position sounds really promising for the future.

Results were back today and like the vet warned, they did come back inconclusive. He's got another appointment Thursday morning with the view of him probably staying in that day and having it removed.
