I'm sorry for the late update! Very good news from vets today His pancreatic levels are back down to 189 (normal is under 200), the vet said this is better than we could ever have hoped or wished for and that he would have been 'happy' with levels under 500 considering he was at 659 two weeks ago, so this is brilliant The scan showed a couple of things, but neither are as nasty/serious as I was dreading. It showed that Alfie has a thickening of his stomach lining, the vet said this is a bit like scar tissue and is probably a result of the pancreatitis as he had a sudden & bad attack and was unable to keep anything in for a few days, so the stomach almost started to digest itself of sorts, as the bile had nothing to do. He's got to have the omeprazole capsules twice daily indefinitely to line his tummy. The vet said it will all settle down in time, it's just something we have to be aware of as there will be medications like Metacam that he won't be allowed to have again. The vet said if he does show signs of pain, I can give him 1/8th of a paracetamol capsule (I always thought this was poisonous to dogs!!). The vet does want him to stay on a low fat diet for good and to keep with little frequent meals. The other thing was a slightly enlarged prostate. The vet did check this at our appointment a couple of days ago and he didn't feel anything unusual but the scan did pick up on a very slight swelling. They said this is common in older dogs and only very slight so not something to be concerned about, but that I could consider having him neutered when he's been 100% back on his feet for a few months. They took some more blood to check cortisol levels and are also running urine tests too, as they said the stomach pain and prostate swelling could both be caused by a UTI too, so they're just making sure. We have to go back in a week for a follow up, but all in all, it was really good news and a huge relief!

This is great news! barley Paracetamol is very safe for dogs as long as the dosage is correct. It can cause liver problems with some dogs if taken long term but if just using for occasional pain relief it will be absolutely fine. There is actually a drug called Pardale V which is licensed for dogs and available without a prescription and it contains 400mg paracetamol and 9mg codeine. So pleased Alfie's pancreatic levels are within normal range and nothing serious was found on the scan.

Rekindling this very old thread! Been doing another doubt I am doing things right things again! Gypsy has been stable for a while so guess I am not going too far wrong but I guess maths is making me doubt myself! She is still on the Lypex to help digestion. I have re-questioned the fat content and current vet just said stick to in region of 8% fat. I try and stick to around 7% allowing for errors in the guides on the raw food products I am using! I am mostly using MVM, Kiezebrink and Paleoridge products (along with offal and chicken breasts from Tesco). Will be getting some Natures Menu in soon as I will use that when I go away in Motorhome. I am on a facebook group for pancreatic issues in dogs. Most of the members talk about all foods needing to be equal to or less than 10% fat on dry matter basis. I know dry weights have been discussed on this thread before and that reality is raw is higher than 10% (excluding the occasional boneless meat like ostrich or zebra...) ! Even Natures menu beef nuggets which is low fat at 4% fat as fed calculates out at 13% dry weight! Anyway reason for post is that there is a second method of calculating level of fat being fed based on Kcal. This is based on equal or less than 25g of fat per 1,000 kcal. www.whole-dog-journal.com/issues/11_12/features/Healthy-Low-Fat-Dog-Foods_16088-1.html Does anyone know how to calculate this? i.e classic type of analysis given on raw dog food Values per 100g Protein 21.4 Fat 6.5 Moisture 74.1 Crude Fibre 0.2 Ash 1.3 I think you times the protein and carb values* by either 3.5 or 4 and times fat content by 8.5 or 9, the sum of these values is a calorie value but this is where I come unraveled as unsure of units and then how to work out the fat grams per 1000 kcal! Note carb value is assumed to be X= 100 - (moisture + protein + fat)
