Sounds positive barley. Alfie certainly seems to have received the best of care today and everything that could be done, has been done. Hope the remaining results are good so you can enjoy xmas with your little man. What a year bless him! x

I heard from the AHT this morning that Alfie's full blood count was fine, neither red or white cells were raised or lowered, so that's more good news Still waiting on lepto and some others I think, too much to remember!

Well the last of his urine results and also his lepto test both came back totally clear today. AHT have said realistically they have exhausted all avenues and can only presume that Alfie ingested a toxin which damaged his kidneys as it passed through and now it's hopefully left his system (we have no idea what it was), his kidneys will begin to repair, or at least not get worse.
Vet said his kidney function is fine - bloods, urine and ultrasound are not showing any signs of kidney failure or reduced function, just a part of his kidneys (it does have a name but I forget it!) has been damaged which is causing the sky high glucose in his urine.
They said this leaves him very open to UTIs as bacteria feeds on glucose but because he is drinking lots, this should help flush his system through, but I just need to keep an eye out for any signs of that.
AHT has said there is nothing more we can do because there is nothing that needs treating... his kidneys are not in need of support, there is no infection and the venous blood gas testing showed that blood pH was fine and he is not deficient in anything, so doesn't need supplementing. So really it's a case of monitoring to ensure he stays well in himself. They said to visit normal vets again first week of new year to have urine test repeated and again in six weeks for bloods to see if there is any change. AHT said to also speak to vet about possibly getting a hormone implant for Alfie as opposed to neutering him.
It is difficult accepting we just need to leave things when he is still drinking so much, but I guess I have to trust the AHT and know that he's had every test possible!

Pleased the AHT have ruled out all of the obvious (and non obvious) conditions, but understand your concern that there is no definitive diagnosis to explain his current symptoms. It is possible that Alfie has had a toxin pass through his system that hasn't caused permanent damage. Last year after swimming in a local lake my youngest dog Holly started to urinate excessive amounts of very dilute urine and it lasted for about 2-3 days. She then recovered completely but my husband was convinced she'd absorbed a toxin from the lake and it had affected/irritated her kidneys, but not damaged them. Strangely it didn't affect my other two dogs who also went in the lake! She has since had full blood panel and urinalysis (all my dogs have this done annually) and her results were perfect. You've done everything you possibly can so try not to worry (I know not easy!)

Just what I was going to say alfiemummy these days things go in one ear and out the other , did you record it on your phone to remember all that I'm terrible when any of my moglets are ill because I'll listen intently but it just doesn't stick unless, in the case of medicine measurements etc, I wrote it down I always take Neil with me too as he doesn't flap like I do Very reassuring that they were SO thorough with all those tests

Why does it have to be MY dog that is flipping medical mystery?!
Alfie had his urine analysis repeated today to see where we stand.
Glucose, which was previously 'higher than the machine can accurately read' is now clear. Totally clear.
The vet left me a voice mail to say he is, yet again, baffled. Glucose in urine but not in blood is what caused my vet and the AHT to give a tentative diagnosis of ''fanconi-type syndrome''... he said the kidney is not like the liver and does not tend to rejuvenate, but something has to have changed with Alfie for there to no longer be any glucose in his urine!
Yet he is still drinking like it's going out of fashion and peeing rivers!
Argh. Obviously I need to have a conversation with the vet again, but why does Alfie never follow the textbooks!

Though he is making the vets think again surely it is a good thing that things have returned to normal on blood and urine front even if the symptoms at home have not changed!

Yes definitely worth a mention caz2golden! Aw reading this thread again is quite sad. In December there was no signs of damaged kidneys at all and then end of Feb he was diagnosed with kidney failure!
