Oh on! poor Alfie, and poor you too. {{HUGS}}
Just when you thought you were now on an even keel with Alfie's health this comes along. Fingers crossed it's something easily treatable, and gets back to full health soon. X

Alfie does know how to keep you (& your vet) on your toes barley. Nothing standarad about his health Reading scallywag's link it sounds nasty but mangeable.

Thank you so much for that link scallywag, lots of good info on there and I've book marked it to show my vet later. He sure does tonib - my vet was like 'oh I do like a complex case to get my teeth stuck into' and I was like yeah but why is it always Alfie lol!

Thanks both - just had blood drawn for lepto testing.
Vet had said that AHT said there was no treatment at all for Fanconi Syndrome but from what I had read, there was stuff that could be done to help. I don't want to be a know it all but my vet has never dealt with this before, so I am a bit loathed to be guided by him! So not really sure whether I wait for results of the lepto test (a week) or push further in the meantime.

I agree, I'd push it. A week is a long time.
Completely unrelated but when I had gerbils I was constantly teaching my vet about them, he didn't have a clue! I was always right. Much as we like to think it (well, some people do!) - vets don't know everything unfortunately.

You're both right.
I showed the Westie article to the vet on my phone this morning and he had a quick glance at it but not a proper read through! So I've emailed it to him and said I want the venous blood gas testing done. I rang the receptionist to ask her to tell the vet and make sure he checks his emails on his coffee break! So I will wait to hear back from them and keep pushing it... the bit that sticks out to me in that article is the ''time lost is kidney function lost'' and obviously we want to avoid that!
I think the lepto testing is a bit of a waste of time tbh. He only had a booster three weeks ago so surely all that will show up is the antibodies from the vaccine. And he avoids water at all costs, so I don't think he's an ideal candidate to get it. He doesn't have most of the symptoms either, but I guess it needs to be ruled out.
The good news is that, drinking & peeing aside, Alfie is acting fine in himself. Eating fine, not lethargic, still playing with his toys etc. At work at the moment and he's on cat watch!

Surely if it is Fanconi Syndrome then you need to start the treatment for that condition regardless of the cause!
A week for blood results is a long time to wait before any action is taken!
My take on it is there will be a treatment regime for the Fanconi Syndrome be it assessing his diet, starting medications etc, that can surely be being put in place now.
As to the Lepto, I guess the question I would be asking is if you wait a week before starting lepto treatment (until blood results are known) can it make make the dogs condition worse? Unless the antibiotics (which I believe is the treatment for lepto!) used to treat lepto would exacerbate the kidney issue I guess I would expect the vet to treat as they suspect even if at later point the bloods proved otherwise!
I think in this case as it is Christmas period coming up I would also push.
It is probably the case that at the moment you do know more about this condition than you vet does as you have had a little time to look into it. I would supply the links to the useful documents you have found to my vet. It is good that your vet is being honest regarding its new to them but then they need to as such go away and improve their knowledge so that they are in a better position to advise you.

caz2golden the problem is that my vet is saying (that the AHT said) that there is no treatment for Fanconi syndrome so we don't have any treatment to start and it's a case of the kidney is damaged and that really is that. As much as I like my vet, I can't accept that when I am reading stuff online that suggests otherwise! The treatment for lepto is doxycycline which in itself can cause Fanconi in rare cases would you believe! So vet is reluctant to start on that until we know for sure whether it is needed or not. Vet said it's highly unlikely it's lepto and I agree. Vet this morning went through blood results from yesterday and the kidney ones - BUN and CREA is it? They're perfect, literally smack bang in the middle of where they should be. Liver fine also and the blood glucose & calcium levels are perfect too. The vet is coming to the office at 5 anyway so I will not let him leave until questions are answered!
