Well i have caught Riley out today eating his own poop,i have wondered for a while because when i return home from work there is a strong smell of poo but none to be seen,i mentioned to my hubby a few weeks ago that i wondered if Riley was eating his own poo and i caught him today. I have googled this and it seems to be quite normal for puppies to do this. A few causes are not enough nutrients in his diet, anxiety, boredom or just generally cleaning up.
I have always cleaned up after him when he as pooped on his puppy pads so there is never any left for him to clean up and i always leave clean puppy pads down for him whilst i am at work. I don't think he is suffering with anxiety as he seems quite content to be left whilst i am at work. but i have recently changed his diet from beta kibble to james w/b ocean fish kibble which i thought was a good choice i was trying to provide him with a better diet. I don't have a problem whilst i am at home with him because i can move asap it is just whilst i am at work. I have read on the intranet to shout LEAVE IT and then give him a treat if i see him eating it.
Riley's puppy class is on Thursday so i thought i might ask for some advice from the trainer but i was just wondering if anybody else has come across this i have never experienced this with my past dogs.
any advice would be much appreciated. :)thanks

We went through this with Jasper, not only his own poo but the cats too. He's now 10 months old, and has grown out of this now. ( I think lol ) Whenever we saw him going to eat it we would say very firmly NO then pick it up when he wasn't looking. We read something about if he see you cleaning it up then he'll do it so not to get in trouble, or something along those lines. We still have to watch him going near the cat litter, but he's very good now.

Not sure how old he is but I would dump the puppy pads. If he doesn't get the option to go while you are away, ie no pads, then he cannot eat it.
Just make sure he gets the option to go outside before you leave.
Adding pineapple to the food is supposed to help. Teaching him a default leave it may also prove useful.

If you take away the puppy pads and he's wanting to go, he'll go anyway in my experience. If you decide to go down that route then Vanish Powershot is a great stain remover.

If he really needs to go then yes, but the chances of him holding it are higher if the pads are not there.

Beau will eat cat poop if given the chance, and yes we say leave it, and clear it up, but I also heard that they do it because they are lacking in nutrients ? But who's to know if everything we read and hear is correct, Good Luck anyways xx

Moving the puppy pads would not stop him from pooing he would just do it on the carpet if he needed to go. And still eat his poo.:-(

My friends puppy ate his poo, she put chili sauce on it and that soon stopped him!! A lot of puppies do it, most grow out of it with time. Have you tried teaching him a leave it command? Offer him a treat, when he goes for it pull it away and tell him to 'leave it', offer again, if he goes for it again pull it away, if he doesn't praise him and give him a treat; build on this until he has a strong leave it command. Not only will this be good for stopping his poo eating but it will come in handy in the future!!! Hope this helped!!!!!

It worked for a friend of mine's pup.

chantel Do you know how long after his meal he goes and poops?? I'm guess you are still feeding 3 or 4 meals. What time are you leaving him and then returning? Could you change the time of the last meal that you feed before you go out so he might do his poop before you leave, could stop him needing to go while your out?? I suggested this to a friend and she just changed the time of one meal to half an hour earlier and her pup went to the toilet before she left for work in the afternoon. The pup doesn't do another one till after her return home and the next meal.

Well in a morning Gladys i normaly give him his breakfast whilst i am getting ready for work but have found out that he has been pooping and eating it whilst i am getting ready once he has had his breakfast, so tomorrow i am going to try giving him his breakfast whilst i am having mine then taking him outside 10 minutes later he normaly as a poo 10 to 15 minutes after eating then hopefully he will have a poo then i will go and get ready for work. It just means he will be having his breakfast half a hour earlier which will suit him he is such a greedy nose.
So fingers crossed.
