Has anybody tried pinapple, just read that 2 chunks of tinned pinapple may put your dog off eating it's poop. Just add 2 small chunks of pinapple to your dog's meal, it leaves a acid taste so may put them off. I might give it a go. It's worth a shot.

Hello chantel, I have never experienced puppy poop eating with my own dog, but we did use puppy training pads. If he's just started his new food, maybe its just affecting him in a minor way, making him eat his own poop?? Maybe it could be something to do with the food changeover. I wouldn't stop using pads if i were you - we used them and Earl soon learnt he needed to toilet on the pads, then we advanced to outside. He is now fully toilet trained and hasn't had an accident indoors for ages! Hope this helps, fingers crossed for you and Riley!

I don't have this problem, but if I did, I know my dogs wouldn't touch their dinner if there was pineapple in it.

Well in a morning Gladys i normaly give him his breakfast whilst i am getting ready for work but have found out that he has been pooping and eating it whilst i am getting ready once he has had his breakfast, so tomorrow i am going to try giving him his breakfast whilst i am having mine then taking him outside 10 minutes later he normaly as a poo 10 to 15 minutes after eating then hopefully he will have a poo then i will go and get ready for work. It just means he will be having his breakfast half a hour earlier which will suit him he is such a greedy nose. So fingers crossed. That half an hour earlier may make all the difference. Give it a go and see what happens?? I don't know whether many dogs will eat their food with pineapple in it?? I don't think Cooper would.

My dogs get pineapple because they like it and it's good for them. They've never eaten their own poop so don't know how effective it is for that purpose.

Our Babs was a sod for doing this. We were going to try pineapple but we didnt have to. It stopped immediately the day we switched her over to raw food, problem solved!

Well i have tried feeding Riley half a hour earlier and then taking him outside 20 minutes later before i get ready for work, but he must just be holding it in until i leave has he just isn't pooping. any way i have tried the pinapple chunks and he loves it although i have to be a littl careful that it dosn't make him loose,so i will see how things go over the next few days.

Oh well bang goes that theory then?!? Hope the pineapple works then, I think I read that you only need to add a little for it to work, so fingers crossed you find the right balance.

Well touch wood since i'v changed the time i give riley is breakfast and started adding a little pineapple things do seem to be better.we do seem to have more of a rush in a morning but more often than not i manage to get riley out side after is breakfast for a poop. And i have not seen any evidence of any poop eating, so it looks like the pineapple might be working. And he loves the pinapple too.

Just wanted to wish you luck chantel. I have heard a few old wives tales about why dogs eat their own! Have no idea if any are true! *They want the bacteria in the poo to help them with their digestion *Grain is easier when digested a second time *to do with minerals and trace elements in their diet *habit I have heard it is common in young dogs (numerous friends have said their youngsters went through a stage of doing this). Maybe its just as they develop there systems immune, digestion etc May have missed the important bit of text but has this only started since changing his diet? If this is the case maybe its taking him longer to adjust and get what he needs out of the food!! Do you leave any toys with him while you are out? Could be cos he is bored!! Easily done without his human play friends!! There used to be a timed feeder thing (think kong did it) which would rotate every x hrs / minutes (about 4 compartments). The compartments were big enough to hold a kong toy. This may break up his day and provide a fun thing at set times when you are out (does not have to be food, could be something like a nylabone or petstange toy etc, anything he thinks special). HTH!! One of mine has started to eat mess!! It was after a treatment of antibiotics and I think she now has a taste for it

Thanx caz, Well i think Riley may have been eating his poop for some time before we had changed his food. Riley is a hungry nose and eats is food within a few minutes so it maybe down to him not digesting it properly or it maybe just down to habit now,but things do seem better.Hopefully yours will stop eating poop soon you could try the pineaple if not, Riley loves it. Well when we leave Riley i always ensure that he has got plenty of toys (ones that are safe that he can't destroy) i normaly fill his kong with some of his left over food or toast which he loves, and leave him with a safe chew having said that he some times gets frustrated with his kong and can tend to chew the wooden beading in the kitchen something else we have just found out (little monkey..) When we went to training the trainer showed us a wobbler larger than a kong that you can put his lunch in and treats and should keep him entertained for some time ,so i think that will be the next item on our wish list. I forgot how expensive puppies are we seem to be buying something every week, its just like having a baby for the first time But he's worth it.

A real monkey with the skirting board! There is usually something that pups do! Mine have been more likely to find paper and kitchen roll and you come home to confetti!! They are not the cheapest things to bring up, but so rewarding youngest liked toys from the petstage range (orka bone, chew chain etc). I have nylabones from when I had my first mutt! Quality in toys i.e can take the roughness is always the most important thing. Wish I had better advice to offer on the poo thing. Is the pineapple working? My problem is its other dogs poo mine are aiming at!!

chantel Jess does this too. We give her: Copro-nil, just sprinkle the right amount (follow instructions on container) onto her food. This works while she is having it but as soon as we take her off it she's back to eating it again... We may try with pineapple soon if it doesn't improve. The copro-nil may work better for other dogs? Here is a link just incase you want to find out more: www.forumanimalhealth.co.uk/small_animal_products_copro-nil.asp
