Last night when I got home from work Jasp came to greet me as usual, then suddenly jumped down and scooted along the carpet. I didn't at first give it any thought, just put it down to a bit of an itchy bum. Later on Jasp again come up on the sofa next to me and started to itch and lick his bottom and at this point I mentioned it to the other half, and when we looked a large swelling had come up right next to his bottom. OH said he hadn't seen it earlier while out for Jaspers walk so it had come up within a matter of a few hours. Anyway Jasper started really going mad scooting and itching and when we got a closer look the swelling had burst and now there was a big hole there. Poor lad was in so much discomfort, I gave him a dose of Loxicom to help with the pain and off he went to the vets first thing this morning. The vets had a good look at it and he has had an ainil gland abess that has burst. He's given him antibiotics for two weeks and we've to carry on with the Loxicom until it runs out. He want to see Jasper again in two weeks, but he says he was impressed with the job that Jasper had done with cleaning the wound himself, so there was nothing that the vet had to do right now but may have to squeeze it when we take Jasp back. Looks like Jasper has two bottoms at the moment.

Not that I know of, OH half took him to the vets this morning while I was at work. Hopefully I'll be able to go to the follow up appointment and ask then. But from what OH had to say it could have been his anil glad was blocked and this is what the vet may have to squeeze when we take him back.

when it comes to being allowed, honey is a very good wound healer, I used honey on Trinket ( Previous Springer ) when she had a hole like that on her back, vet suggested it, not saying you should do that thou without asking, be a bit sticky there thou as opposed to a back, he would need a pair of doggie pants

I thought of that (is it Manuka Honey) but I think it might encourage him to lick even more. I also thought of getting a babygrow to put on him, but we'd have to take it off every time he went out, either on a walk or just in the garden for the loo.

Hmmmm! but as they are for bitches in season Jasper might have a bit more to get in them. At the moment the vets doesn't seem to bothered about Jasp licking, and didn't say to put a cone of shame on or anything, so we'll see how he gets on and review the situation again in a day or so once the antibiotic get to work.

Poor Jasper I would just leave it. Once the meds fully kick in he'll probably leave it alone anyway. cazypops has Jasper had diarrhea/soft stools recently? Often the anal glands can become impacted, infected and then rupture, leaving the red, painful abcess. Very painful - poor lad.

Ouch ouch and double ouch! Amazing how quickly it can happen. Hope he heals quickly for his sake. Hope once the drugs kick in that he does leave it alone to heal. If a dog does this what is the long term prognosis for the gland etc?

If a dog does this what is the long term prognosis for the gland etc? Sometimes they heal fine. But if not or becomes a recurring problem, surgery may be required to remove the anal gland.

Thanks gypsy, Jasper has never had really solid stools. It's always a bit soft and as the walk goes on can become runny. He's never shown any signs of impacted gland, just an odd scoot, but nothing to set the alarm bells off. This was so out of the blue. I don't know what the long term prognosis is caz2golden, at the moment I'm just keeping everything crossed that it heals and he gets back to 100%. When I get to see Chris (our vet) I'll hopefully remember to ask all these questions.
