Sometimes they heal fine. But if not or becomes a recurring problem, surgery may be required to remove the anal gland. Let's just hope it heals, but IF he had to have surgery how would it effect him? Surgery is a bit tricky because there are lots of nerves in this area that may not recover. There is also the risk of infection spreading to the anus and rectum, so the vet will only suggest removal as a last resort. If Jasper is still having problems after the meds the vet might suggest flushing out the anal gland under GA. If it does heal ok it might be neccesary for Jasper to be seen by a vet nurse at the practice every 4 weeks to have his glands emptied to prevent further problems in the future. A lot of owners notice dogs scooting when they have anal gland issues but many don't, some bite the base of their tail alot, stare at their backends, or have 'imaginary poo's! As for how it will affect Jasper afterwards...assuming surgery goes well...it shouldn't affect him at all.

Jasper seems a lot more comfortable this evening. He's leaving his bum alone for the most part and sleeping. He's also a bit down coz OH has gone fishing without him.

Just as well cazypops cause you wouldn't have relaxed, he needs to also stay out mucky water ? Only a mum knows what to do yeah ? Well my O.H wouldn't ... It would be " stop worrying he will be ok, a bit of dirty water won't harm " yeah right

It would be " stop wirrying he will be ok, a bit of dirty water won't harm " yeah right That's it exactly, if Jaspers anywhere near water he wants to be in it. So no fishing for a while. To be honest though, OH is more of a worry wort than I am, so there was noway he was taking him with him. That and he can leave the responsibility of the med to me.

Sorry to hear about Jasper cazypops. That looks painful but if the abscess has burst then some of the pain will have gone & the Loxicom will also help there as well as fighting any infection. Hope it heals well & no more action is needed.

He's feeling a lot better this morning I think. He's given it a wash, but mostly sleeping, which is nothing new. Give it another hour though and he'll be busting my chops for his walk.

He's doing brilliantly, thanks for asking scallywag. He's not worrying it, but he is doing a really good job of keeping it clean. I've not been able to get a close look at it lately, (He's either laid on the wrong side or he's got his bum tucked up in the corner of the sofa, and while he's stood up if I try and look at it he starts jumping round like a mong) OH says it was still weeping a bit today, but it's not bothering him. Still go another week of antibiotics and then he's to go back to the vets for a check up, and all being well I'll know more then.
