I manage to catch hold of the little rascal and tip him upside down, and I'm happy to report that he's healing well. The hole has now closed and it doesn't look red or anything nasty like that, so I'm happy. I'm going to ask the vet if there is any reason as to why his poos are soft, even when he's had a raw meal with chicken wings.

No his poos have always been soft. We've tried allsorts to make it firmer, ie stop giving certain treads, change of food, even raw meat with bone at least once a week. (not confident to do it full time)
I think this might be why he's ended up with the abscess, but won't really know until I can speak to the vet in a weeks time.

What is his general diet? Perhaps the soft poops might be something to do with that. I don't think bone once a week would affect it the whole week, I mean food doesn't stay in the digestive system that long so bone would only affect one or two poops after a certain amount of time since being eaten. gypsy & caz2golden are probably the best to ask on matters of diet and poop (haha, sorry you two!).

cazypops sorry to hear Jasper had a abscess, but glad to hear it's healing. My last dog Rosie had an abscess on her bottom and we used to clean it by squirting salty water in it with a syringe. She used to have her anal glands emptied about every 6 weeks. Also like gypsy mentioned, she had her anal gland flushed and that was worth having done and she then went about 2 months between having them emptied. We didn't want her going through having the gland removed and our vet wasn't keen on that either.

Thanks sodapop, that's what I'm thinking is going to have to happen. If it is, then I'm going to ask if they can teach me how to do it. Just as well that Jasper loves going to the vets, I'm sure he thinks he's going to doggie daycare when we go there. But if there is any way of firming up his poos then that would be better.

(1 tsp for small dogs and 1 tbsp for large dogs) of All bran (or similar) added to his food on a daily basis for example, should produce a firm, bulky stool that encourages the anal glands to empty naturally. Personally I've not met a raw fed dog yet that had anal gland issues though.

My Tilly had an infected anal gland last November. Backwards and forwards to the vets and a few different types of antibiotics, it eventually healed (took longer than it should have to heal!). Thankfully it didn't need flushing! Glad to hear Jasper is on the mend!

Thanks gypsy that's a big help. Jasper only gets a raw meal once or twice a week. I just can't get my head around the percentages, and I've tried the completes, but I haven't found one yet that Jasper likes. When I do feed raw it's 300gms split over two meals of chicken wings, liver, pork & beef mince and beef steak or turkey steak. bectil Jasper has completely healed now. The only thing left is a tiny scab. I'm really pleased with it. He's been on Amoxicillin for two week, (he'll finish on Thursday) and loxicom for a week. Plus I decided to let him keep it clean by himself, and he's done a fantastic job of. He's still had an odd scoot, and I don't know of that's just the scab itching or if his anil glands still need emptying. We'll know the answer to that question after he's been back to the vets on Thursday morning.

Took Jasper back to the vets this morning. He was really pleased with how well it has healed. He also aspirated his anil glands and told me what to watch out for and there was a possibility of it recurring, he also told me how to do it myself. If I need to do it, and can't manage it then I've to take him back.
I also got some All Bran today so going to give that a try, (hope he will eat it) and if that works fingers crossed it won't happen again.

Ha ha ha! it's ok scallywag it didn't smell when the vet did it this morning. He said if needs be lift Jaspers tail and massage Jaspers bottom, and it should make the glands release. Well in theory it should anyway.
