Roman was fine this morning but this afternoon I found him under a dining room chair & didn't look like he wanted to move. A few minutes later I saw him going into the conservatory & he was walking on 3 legs - no weight on his left hind leg. He then proceeded to try & jump on to the chair, but wouldn't put any weight on the leg. Don't know how he did it but he got up & on to the top of the cahir back - one of his favourite places. I couldn't see anything obvious so contacted the vets & got an appointment at 4:05 p.m. this afternoon. The vet couldn't feel anything wrong but he was reacting in pain - whimper but not vicious in any way - when his knee was felt. So an injection of Rheumicom with 4 more days of Metacam (same active ingredient) & to be kept in with limited jumping or stairs. The vet wants to see him again in a week, earlier if we have any concerns. Glad we kept the cage from his incarceration in 2012 - so I suggest that & she said cage rest would be ideal. We've noticed that, like every winter, he plumps up a bit & I thought he'd put a bit more on than normal this year but when he was weighed I was still slightly surprised to find he was 6.1Kg instead of his normal 5.6 Kg! She thinks he may have jumped down from a height & strained/jarred something especially as he's that bit heavier. After a bit of room re-arrangement he's in his cage now & has been a lot better than he was in 2012 - those from the old forum may well remember the stressful first few days. Mind you not sure if he's resigned or just can't move properly enough to object. He has managed some food, water & the litter tray so not completely unable to move but its obviously very painful & one leg is not working or too painful to use. I hope the vet is right & its nothing worse. We had him out the crate this evening so that we could hoover out the litter he'd scattered everywhere & to give him his Metacam. So put him on the ground - not good. He doesn't want to put any weight on his left hind & has no confidence on moving his right as a result so walking looks as if his right is the bad one as he drags it. He did try putting weight on the left & it wobbled from side to side in the middle (sort of hock/knee - I was looking from the rear). I'm torn in that I know I should give the Metacam time to work, its only been a day, but this didn't look good at all. I think I'll see what he's like in the morning & perhaps ring the vets for advice. If he needs an x-ray he'll have to be starved from 10 pm so that would mean Thursday at the earliest. I could stave him tonight but I wouldn't be able to speak to a vet until after the surgery hours which could be too late to get an appropriate x-ray slot. Obviously they would cope with this in an emergency but I don't think this can be classed as one. Of course I could just be an over-worrying cat servant!!

Of course you're an over-worrying cat servant - as are all cat owners!
I would contact the vet; let us know the outcome.
Thinking of you Roman x

I'd be on the phone too tonib, whenever one of our cats has had Metacam they seem to respond within a matter of hours. Let us know how he is, and how you get on. Gentle {{HUGS}} for Roman. X

This morning he wan't any better - I'd say worse but that could well have been due to being in a crate & not able to get a momentum up on walking. He was just turning with his front legs & then pivoting on his right hind to go where he wanted to. He'd used the litter tray, drank & eaten so obviously could move. So I rang the vets & we agreed that probably seeing the vet was better than a phone conference - whenever they could get to the phone. So 9:50 appointment.
Before I went I got Roman out the cage & tried to video him walking - of course he wasn't too keen so not a good view.
I'd left the carrier outside the room & shut the door whilst I did this. He eventually laid down at the far end of the reoom & went out to put the phone away & then get him into the carrier, as I turned to go get him I sensed some movement behind him & saw Roman going lickedty split (well as fast as he could on 3 legs!) down the corridor, through the kitcehn & into the utility, with me in quick pursuit. Luckily he stopped at the catflap as I think he realised he might find that a bit difficult & I got him with no problem - phew! Stupid me not shutting the living-room door - I just didn't think he would even attempt it!
Saw the vet - she thought the awkwardness could be down to cage rest so perhaps give him a few hours out & that it was early for the Metacam to have a real affect. So we're giving him it for today & tomorrow & he's booked in for x-ray on Friday on the understanding that if does improve then I can cancel. I'll have to make the decision tomorrow night as he'll need to be starved from 10 pm. I'm also giving him the day in our isolation ward (dining-room & conservatory combination) & in the the crate once it gets dark & overnight - its gets quite cold in the conservatory (with no sun & cold outside - limited heating) & hence the dining-room when the dividing doors are open.
He's spent the day on one of the comfy chairs although has also got down for the litter, water & food & back up again. Still hobbling badly but seems to have more confidence of being on 3 legs. He's back in the crate now.
One thing is that he's has taken the Metacam nicely & was even licking it off the syringe!! I think he understands its for his own good & accepts his incarceration with good grace, but of course he will take any opportunity to get out the house as he likes going out.

The devious little devil trying to escape! Thank goodness you caught up with him. I hope the day in your isolation ward works for him and he won't need to go for an x-ray.
