I see what you mean about his leg looking like a chicken leg! Glad he is back home now and seems to be settling, shame about his paw curling in, i wonder what causes that. Hopefully it will get back to normal soon.
If you need a bigger low sided litter tray, have you thought about the puppy trading pad trays? They are very low sided but still enough that you could put some litter in and pee not coming out, and you get them in various sizes as obviously they are for all sorts of sizes of puppies. We used to sell them at my old work from Trixie but I'm sure many other companies do them too. They are much lower sided that any cat litter tray I've ever seen.

Awww, what a shame, did the vet say what has caused that to happen? I see what you mean about his leg looking like a chicken leg! Glad he is back home now and seems to be settling, shame about his paw curling in, i wonder what causes that. Hopefully it will get back to normal soon. If you need a bigger low sided litter tray, have you thought about the puppy trading pad trays? No mention of why his paw folds under cazypops & smilesbetter, I've read that it can happen - worst scenario nerve damage, but I suspect not in Roman's case as it seems slightly better today although he still trails his leg but that will be the knee & confidence. Thanks for the suggestion of the puppy training pad tray, it would definitely be low enough for him but the litter wouldn't stay in it. Roman is a digger & mounder - we think he's trying to get to Australia or building sandcaastles! Every time he uses the litter tray we have to clear the litter from around the tray. there's often more outside than in!! In fact this morning, we've changed back to the deeper tray & changed to wood pellet litter instead of the fine(ish) clumping litter on the basis that the it just might stay more in the tray & also be easier to get up again. We've been using dustpan & brush where we can so as to put it back in the tray, the rest we have to vacuum up (we have a good handheld one). When he goes to the cattery they give him a hooded tray as they were having a lot to clear up (regardless of which litter they tried). It helps a bit but there's no way, at the moment, that he'd safely get in or out of one.

Haha oh dear! I didn't think about the litter getting thrown about everywhere of course haha, that would be a big issue with the puppy pad trays haha.
How had he been today? Glad the foot is seeming a bit better today.

Well he woke us up earlish this morning with a vengance. When we checked on him the litter was everywhere & he'd used it for poo unfortunately it went out side the crate - luckily solid His water bowl had been tipped up so water everywhere! So king him out the crate with me cuddling him & cleaning his foot, whilst Mark clean the crate etc. We managed to get him resettled, pilled (the easy bit! ) Penny's litter dealt with, the carpet vac'd & when we came back having done the cats' food he'd scattered the litter everywhere again - this time hadn't actually used it - & was sitting by the tray I swear he was smiling!!!!. So that was a sweep & vac job again. So all complete 1.5 hours later!!! We've put back the larger litter tray but used wood pellet litter instead so it should be easier to clear up when he spills it. But he hasn't used it yet - not sure if he feels as confident on the litter as he's gone into it a couple of times - or it isn't deep enough. We'll sort it out to suit both him & us soon.

I caught the sneaky beggar washing his wound this morning!! Luckily no damage to the stitches. His cone is on with a bandage which I suspect may have stretched a bit & allowed the cone to move back. I got one of his old collars & thread that through as well. Just keeping an eye on him to make sure that has done the job & he can still eat & drink - oh & breathe as he's put on a bit weight since he used that one!!!! It was not impressed & boy can his face make you certain what he thinks Just seen he cam get to the back of his knee but not the front where the wound is - at least that's what it looks like - need to keep an eye on that though. Got up early (for me) this morning & checked Roman while Mark got ready for work. he'd used the litter tray overnight (just urine) & the litter wasn't everywhere - hopefully the extra bit we put in last night has done the trick.

Roman is certainly trying to get the better of you! But, you are ahead of him at every attempt I see.

Early evening Monday we caught him still able to lick his wound so rang the vet for advice (free although out of hours) & we were advised to put something on it, such as shampoo or washing up liquid, that he would really dislike & to get a bigger collar in the morning. However I re-checked the size of the collar we had from 2012 & it was the next size - very little in it but he couldn't reach his wound with it on. However it is harder for him to eat/drink as it gets in the way of the bowls more. I've been taking it off for some of his meals & keeping a watch on him, although he does seem to manage on other occasions. Today he had a review with the vet & they're quite pleased with him & he's to go back in 5 days (Monday) to have his stitches out. His foot is still turning under a bit but he's straighten it out quite well. Its just going to take time. Once the stitches are out he can/must have some exercise. Limited for another 2 weeks. The vet reckons 6-8 weeks in all. The appointment was at the branch with the hydrotherapy unit & the hydrotherapist was there so I made enquires as whether they did cats as I was aware that it was used for recovery of dogs from this injury. She said they'd not done cats before but she was prepared to try if the vet thought it would help - after discussion we may try it as Roman is fairly placid & doesn't mind water, although swimming in it might be another matter. But we'll see how it goes. Apparently the vet who operated told the head vet about Roman having torn his cruciate ligament - completely gone - and he couldn't believe it. The amusing thing is the head vet said to me (with a wry smile), when Roman saw him earlier in 2015, "Can't you bring me something more interesting than a cat bite abscess!" I feel I should now say I did but someone else dealt with it or did he have to tempt fate!

Why would the vet suggest washing up liquid?! When I was at college we got told that you must absolutely never use washing up liquid on a cat, and that some poeople had washed a cat with it once and it had caused such bad burns on its skin that it had to be put down.
Glad the bigger cone seems to be helping.
If you do end up doing hydrotherapy with him please get a video for us! I'd love to see a cat doing it!
And hahaha well you certainly did bring them something more interesting than a bite abscess this time!

smilesbetter, I wasn't aware of that issue with washing up liquid - thanks. It was a couple of days ago so I suppose it could have been shower gel not washing up liquid that was suggested & my memory got it wrong for typing but obviously it was on a small amount just enough to coat the wound area.. We didn't use it anyway as we found the larger cone.

I wish I could remember what ingredient it was that was the issue. I only use water to wash my cats or would get special cat shampoo if necessary. I know cats generally hate citrus though so you could always try a bit of lemon juice if the worst came to the worst haha although if it got in the would that would be quite sore so probably not the best idea haha, plus you'd run the risk of being savaged! Mieze is furious if she comes up to see me and I've just eaten a juicy orange and have the juice on my hands still haha!

He's getting very bored, scratching up the crate floor covering, shredding the newspaper, playing & sitting in his litter. The only thing that seems to calm him is sitting on my lap (he's not normally a lap cat) although he has had one try at escape when Mark had him today. Luckily he was caught in time but he was definitely heading for the outside world on 3 legs. He's got an appointment tomorrow to have his stitches out, hope it goes Ok as he does seem to have some pain but not sure where. I just hope his temper tantrums haven't done any damage. He does have an expressive back - this says it all! The back says it all 2016_02_28 P1040169 by osiriscat, on Flickr

Good luck at the vets. I expect Roman will sit there as good as gold while you tell the vet how naughty he has been. A lovely back!
