I bought a small reduced chicken this afternoon to portion up for the dogs.
While I was doing the portioning, I managed to slice into my finger with my cleaver (that'll teach me to use the cleaver for everything). I was so preoccupied with washing the cut to make sure I got it clean that I didn't notice Ellie eating the string that had been on the chicken. I'd knocked it onto the floor earlier and didn't pick it up straight away as I hadn't wanted to have to wash my hands again.
Would you be concerned if that was your dog? She seems fine at the minute, although she did bring her tea back up a little while ago (it was pigs heart that she's never had before). The piece of string was maybe about 12 cms long, not sure. It wasn't massive, as I said the chicken was only small, but I'm worried it'll somehow get caught up in her intestines. At the same time, I don't want to rush her to the vets if it's just going to come out again tomorrow.

Wouldn't like to say for sure orpheous, but one of my dogs was an absolute dustbin and gave me many a scare, but was always fine.Skips one for chomping on grass and sea weed, which upsets most dogs, but it doesn't affect him,so I would tend to just be watchful. P.s.hope finger isn't too sore.

How long was the string? Maddy swallowed a 6 inch wooden lolly stick once and it came out fine at the other end. I did worry constantly about it splitting and tearing her insides but it was out completely whole in 2 days.
I probably wouldn't worry too much about the string for now, but keep an eye for any signs of discomfort.

I would keep an eye on her, keep checking tummy looks normal and wait and watch the poop!! Cooper has had me worried many a time eating large pieces of string from his rope toy before I could clean it all away and even felt body parts from a rope animal, all have passed through with no worries. Can you give her some treats to make sure food can still move through ok? And make sure she is drinking. Ooh make sure you put something on that cut, TCP or other.

P.s.hope finger isn't too sore. Well, I have to say migsy, Ellie is very similar. She's eaten all sorts in the past - plastic bags, condoms, grass, sweet wrappers... she's always been fine. But it's just a worry. I read a story today of two dogs (an English bulldog and a French bulldog) who died after swallowing threads from a rope toy. The string Ellie swallowed today was slightly elasticated, so I have no idea whether that makes it more dangerous. I would guess that it was about 6 inches SarahHound. Ellie has also swallowed a wooden lolly stick whole before. We thought it had come out a couple of days later, but actually, it took a week and she threw it back up whole. I'll be fine to keep an eye on her tomorrow, but on Monday I think we're all back at work at various times so she might have to be on her own and that's when I'll worry. I'll keep an eye on her though I would keep an eye on her, keep checking tummy looks normal and wait and watch the poop!! Eek! Cooper sounds worse than Ellie for eating things! We're always very watchful with her because she does literally pick anything up. She's usually quite good and when we say "what have you got?", she spits whatever it is out, as though she hasn't just been chewing at it, but I just didn't notice until I turned round and the string was gone. I'll make sure she gets something in a little while. Keeping her drinking is harder to do now that she's on raw food - she doesn't drink half as much as she used to! Oh, she did eat some cheese just after she'd thrown her tea back up. I think she would have eaten her tea again if I hadn't stopped her because I wanted to check it for string! I've had Savlon on it I also grated three of my fingers while making bone broth and grating the ginger to go in it! Not having a very good day! Maybe I should take it as a hint to stop cooking?

Years ago, our young BC Ceri got hold of a ball of knitting wool - and swallowed a great, long length!! We got the remaining ball off her, and then pulled at the wool that was emerging from her mouth. It kept coming! There was an enormous length that she had swallowed, it came out all slimy and ghastly: about two metres of it from what I remember!

Yikes! That sounds like a magic trick gone wrong CollieSlave! I have heard that you shouldn't pull on things like string if a dog has swallowed them as it can cause problems, but I wonder if that's if they've swallowed them and then either vomited them back up, or they've come out the other end... I guess nothing bad happened to Ceri?

Gosh CollieSlave that sound delightful and very lucky you caught it when you did. orpheous87 Yeah I have to be quick when Cooper is in a destroy toys mood but thankfully they have only been a few objects over the last 5 years. Although you got me worried about the French bulldog and the rope bits!?!

If she doesn't pass it after a while, get her to a vet. Otherwise try not to worry too much and look after yourself, damnit!

gladys, did you not see it on twitter? I saw it on a tweet from Pooch & Co that I'm sure you'd RT'd too. It didn't say what kind of rope toy it was, but I believe the dogs were in America, so possibly different to one made here? Lol, thanks Pawsforthought! I am quite accident prone, I have to admit. I'm going to keep an eye on her, although I'm not sure what would be a reasonable amount of time for it to pass? A few days at the most?

Hopefully it'll pass tomorrow or Monday. If it hasn't passed by Wednesday, it'll have to be the vets I think.

Well that's good to know CollieSlave! Probably a good thing the wool was unusable lol. Haha scallywag, no she hasn't been out to the toilet yet. She won't go until we go for our morning walk in 15 mins. She's happily frightening pigeons at the window at the minute. And no, it was white!
