A lot of you will have missed last night's goings on as they were happening, but will be able to see them as I believe the posts are still open.
Jmk, a fairly new member, decided to pick a fight with Smokeybear - and was lucky not to be torn a new one in my opinion - after some fairly innocent questions.
The language used by jmk was shocking, especially on a forum frequented by younger teenagers, and I'm sure their parents wouldn't be happy if they knew their child was able to see such things on a pet forum.
My question is, should there be more active moderation on the forum to take action should this kind of thing happen again? Would you be willing to moderate if asked? I can only add one poll, so if you would be willing to moderate, please say so in the comments.
Hopefully if enough of us speak up, the admins will put something in place.

Yes I definitely would and have offered twice in the past Its not like you can do harm to the forum, but at least threads could be locked ( hopefully wont need to but that's twice now I have seen a big upset on here, one was right after I joined the forum ) other bonus is that if someone comes on here advertising on 8 threads they could be removed, that happened only this week Edit - and agree that it has to be more than one persons decision to do something

I think the moderation should be more active, yes, but not TOO strict as then you can risk losing the fun from the forum. I would be willing to moderate, and as I don't work right now, would be in a good position to get on in the day when sometimes moderation is lacking. I always hope that YP will ask some of us to moderate the forum, and I really don't understand why it hasn't happened yet! The only problem is if people become chummy and then the moderator sides with a friend over an issue - they must be the kind of person that can remain neutral

I've said yes but again I'm in the middle in the sense that I wouldn't want the freedom of speech element somewhat removed from the forum BUT How great would it be if we had some sort of democratic system with a 'board' of moderators where you all have to discuss with others before taking action against a member? I think that would maintain the feel of the forum while being able to put a stop to offensive language and bullying. I'd love to moderate this forum, but I would do so in that way, where I'd like to have other moderators to work with and find solutions with. I don't think it would ever happen though

I find it rather odd that one of the reasons the forum moved was so it would be easier for the magazine to moderate....mmm, what happened there YD? I think moderation would be a good idea, but like Avansa said, not too strict!

Yes we need mods in my opinion. But as others said, we should still be able to debate fairly without them taking sides.
Maybe we should comment on their Facebook page about this, they seem to moderate that quite well!

Yes we definitely need mods, last night being an example. If it had been monitored it could have been shut down the minuet it started to get personal. That sort of thing is not acceptable, upto that point the debate was very entertaining to watch unfold, I have no problem with that, it was the personal attacks and foul language I took exception too, so yes we need monitors. I'd volunteer but I don't get on for long enough to be of help but I'd back anyone who would be willing to put them self forward.

Blimey. Missed it all last night so just gone back and had a read of it all. What on earth goes on some people's minds to think it okay to use language in such a way!? Some light moderation definitely needed.

Wow. Never thought language like that would come from such a friendly seeming member (to start with). I don't have any idea why jmk burst out into flames like that - especially toward such a knowledgable member as smokeybear! Who I am sure most of us members know is not easily outdone when it comes to dog info! My gosh, members like that should just keep out of the way. I agree with light moderation. However, I do think it should be LIGHT. We don't want the forum ruined because new mods are picking at everything they may SUSPECT could be 'harmful' to the running of the forum. When something as serious as what has just occurred happens (hopefully it never will againβ¦) it should be picked up on. I assume the current mods have no idea of this situation? I am pleased jmk has a tiny bit of sense to at least remove himself from the forum. Only daft people would not do so when they know they are causing so much online damage and upset as they have! I would like to moderate, but am mature enough to know it should be done by an adult member of the forum, for wisdom purposes and ability to control, stick up to and sort out problems that may arise. They need to be able to deal with things (obviously). This mod also needs to be a regular and dedicated forum member, in my opinion. Whether people agree is another situation.

I think having a few members moderating the forum would be the best thing because we all know each other, we know (in most cases) if someone is intending to be hurtful or cause trouble and when to just take things with a pinch of salt. I don't know that they would ever put enough trust in us to do it though I hate how they're really involved with the Facebook page, but really the forum just seems to be an afterthought. I don't know that they would even have carried it on had there not been so many members still wanting to use it.

I agree with others comments on light moderation. I actually think that the moderation should be coming from the Your Cat / Your Dog team. Reason for this is that perhaps incorrectly I thought the forums are as such overseen by the magazines!!

I think it would be quite easy for members to moderate the forum if there were sort of set rules
I mean quite lax ones still, but if everyone KNEW that any foul language meant a deleted/edited post or closed thread, for example, then objectivity wouldn't be an issue, because it could be 'against moderator rules' to delete someone's account or be biased in any way, for example.
So that way we could be sure no one would abuse their moderator powers.

Still only 13 voters ? Theres far more active members than that, its their forum too, I don't understand the lack of how can I put it ? Input ? How they would like to see the forum run, keep it safe for youngsters etc. how can a poll of 13 votes be taken seriously by admin at this rate ?

scallywag i think the lack of votes might be due to the fact that the YC people do not know what went on last night and they have not had any bullying, so they might not see it as necessary
