About 3 or 4 weeks ago I made a raised border for my pumpkins. It is only made from cheap wood, but it will do! I'm not sure if the pumpkin vines are the size they should be for the time of year (seen as the pumpkins were planted somewhere suitable abit late) - they've grown alot since though.

Not sure what size they should be but they DO look nice and healthy and given this rain and a few days of sunshine I'm sure they'll romp away Keep us posted on their progress! Hopefully this time next year I'll have my allotment up and running and I'll have some nice fat veggies growing well

@gillykat, will do! I don't think my dad wants me to grow them because the vines can grow quite long, but they are more or less the only plant I really enjoy growing Have you heard anything more about your allotment? I'm looking forward to hear about all the progress when you do get your allotment!

No, haven't heard anything more yet but when we were chatting to a guy with one a couple of weeks ago he said the chap in charge, Mr Batey, is known to drag his feet at times I said I'll give him a month (to allow for him possibly being on his summer holidays ) but after that I'll be starting Operation Allotment! There's empty plots available, some very overgrown, so no reason whatsoever why I shouldn't get one! Don't worry, I will be polite but I WILL be persistent (like a terrier with a bone!) because I love gardening and I used to work as a gardener but I live in a first-floor flat so don't have a garden but NEED to have my hands in the soil! He'll give in in the end....if only to get rid of me When I worked as a gardener (back in 1994) we had a polytunnel and grew peas, marrows and courgettes & cucumbers in there and with the heat and shelter and humidity they all grew like beanstalks and seemed to grow feet, not inches, every single day By midsummer it was like being in a jungle! I loved working in there but by gum, it was hot!!! I used to tuck my t-shirt into my bra and wear shorts.....but in those days I was a 9st skinny Minnie Couldn't do that nowadays....not without scaring the neighbours anyway Neil's planning on how to build me a polytunnel once we do get our allotment so I'm looking forward to getting stuck in and getting stuff growing

Did you use to do what I do now, garden maintenance or were you a gardener for like an old country estate? What made you stop being a gardener? It would seem daft of them to turn you away if there are allotments available. I last heard there was a waiting list I think for the allotments around my town... and they are cramped! If you grow loads of plants again, you should blog everything! I think I posted this blog before on the blog thread, but I'll post it again, you might like it! carletongarden.blogspot.co.uk/

I was just doing garden maintenance It was an NVQ in Amenity & Commercial Horticulture which sounds geet posh as owt but in reality we went around folks' gardens every two/three weeks and tidied them up - mowed, pruned, edged etc. It WAS enormous fun but was only a 9 month course and in the autumn I was back on the dole unfortunately. I'll definitely get a blog sorted too....even if just to keep myself positive at how much we've achieved when it seems that it's one step forward, three steps back! Funnily enough I've got addicted to The Beechgrove Garden on tv (Thursday in Scotland, Sunday morning in rest of UK) as it concentrates more on growing stuff and comparing different methods. Two weeks ago they were doing potatoes and this week they had some handy tips on growing melons! All so fascinating!!!

Just for you gillykat, because I know you love nasturtiums. I picked a bunch for my mum-in-law and took a photo of them for you!
