Has anyone noticed how many hazelnuts are about this year? And how early they are? There's a tree at the bottom of my road that has huge ones on it and I've had most of them - they are in the airing cupboard drying. I'll take a photo of them compared to the ones on all the other trees.
Also, has anyone noticed there are no acorns on the oak trees for the squirrels this year? Or is it just in my part of the country? Last year we had so many and this year, none at all.

I'm not sure whereabouts there's any hazelnuts up here (probably loads and I'm just not looking properly ) but I know where there's quite a few oak so I'll go check them out tomorrow. Funnily enough, just up the road from me, literally two minutes' walk, there's a group of ornamental rowan trees which can be guaranteed to attract waxwings every winter. Last year they had virtually no berries on them but the year before was a very heavy crop and I saw 50+ waxwings feeding there. This year, I noticed two weeks ago, it's a good crop again so I'll be keeping tabs on those trees in the next two/three months Hawthorns in Northumberland seem to have a good crop on them too which is just starting to ripen.

Not yet - haven't heard a thing from the council I was warned that Mr Batey isn't the fastest person to respond to applications and emails but it IS annoying because there are a few empty ones which you would think the council would be only too happy to rent out and get cash from.

I chopped down my Hazelnut tree a few years ago,the sharp shells dropping are a nightmare.Skip tries his hardest to pick his way through area we walk which is covered with them.Sweet Chestnut tree got the same treatment as their fine spikey casings are a nuisance too.We pass a couple of what looks like Horse chestnut trees in the village, but the fruit on them look more like kiwi fruit, and are the same size too,no one seems to know what they are,but the trees are full of them.

On my way back to Berlin after a wee visit to Scotland, decided to take some of the shoots off my huge monster of an aloe Vera plant which I have had for years and which has been extremely prolific. In fact, while I was back I visited granddad, and he has an aloe Vera plant I gave him from my main plant. It's got tons of baby ones growing off it too including one which has grown right down the pot and out one of the holes in the bottom so there is now a little aloe Vera growing and propping up the pot hahaha. Thought I'd start the German invasion. I have an aloe Vera in Germany but it's not the same type and I do really love my monster Scottish one.
Also stopped off at the garden centre to stock up on seeds for next year on my way to the airport. Got strawberries, loads of peas, tomatoes, asparagus, thyme, rosemary, broccoli and a bunch of other veg to grow, oh and a yellow gooseberry which looks delicious. Can't wait to get growing them!
Also got some lettuce seeds of various types in my flat which I intend to grow in a hydroponic system in the flat over winter which should be good. Shouldn't need to buy any more lettuce once these get on the go! I need to figure out how to save seeds from things though, I've never done that before but would love to start doing so as seeds can cost a fortune and it can be really hard to find seeds of the exact same type as one that I really liked (for example this years tomatoes haven't been great but last year I had fantastic ones, wish I'd saved the seeds from those!

gillycat - I'm collecting seeds off my super-sized nasturtiums for next year. If you'd like some, send me a pm. That would be great BUT....I've got to remove my pots and containers from the courtyard in case somebody falls over them!!! I had a letter on Friday from our housing association saying that the area officer had been doing her six-monthly inspection and she wasn't happy with them.....even though they are against a back wall and nowhere near any place where anybody (even mortal drunk ones!!!) could walk into them or fall over them etc My other neighbour has had to remove her bike which was behind the flats - the officer's excuse being that it might hinder access!!!! It was nowhere near the path but instead was up on top of a raised bed of soil that hasn't got anything growing in it!!!!! We are both pretty angry about this stupid busybody throwing her weight around over silly PETTY things I'm just going to have to grow a few plants indoors instead once Lily has been spayed and can go outdoors.....hopefully she'll not be as quick to try eating them or knocking them over then!

Has anyone got grapes growing in their garden? For the very first year we have grapes but although they are changing to red they aren't very big - just wondered if it's too late for them to ripen enough to eat - there's 8 bunches on the vine.

Oooh lotsofcats can't help you there, would have thought they'd be ripe by now though. It could be a case of hours ripening up as fast as possible now it's getting colder to get the seed out there. Jealous of you having grapes, always wanted to grow my own! One day, one day!

I've got a grape vine, but I've been picking off the flowers in the spring because no doubt Alfie would eat the grapes once ready! I will have to get some photos of the pumpkin vines tomorrow, as they are huge now and got 2 pumpkins for definite! I just hope they'll turn orange in time for halloween
