Feel free to post tips, advice, questions, ECT. about plants. Add photos of what you're growing or have grown and if you would like a plant identifying. You can also add the type of plants you know that are poisonous to dogs/cats bectil

Following on from ' The Random Happy News Thread', which orpheous87 and I were talking about pumpkins What I did, when there was a male flower open, I cut it off, then if there wasn't a female flower open, I looked for those that were about to open, then pulled the petals open carefully then pollinated the flower - I can't remember if it worked or not.. perhaps that is why I only got two I will try next year though, hopefully I will have some containers suitable for pumpkins then. I sown last years pumpkin seeds, but unfortunately they didn't take. Snails last year, not germinating this year.. must have been beginners luck the first time round Oh dear! Are the leaves still green? or do they have like a white powder on them? My vines started to go like that, as I think they had powdery mildew - I can't imagine this weather doing them any good. bectil

I can grow grass...does that count as gardening? Hahah, yes Do you grow cat grass for your cat? My friend from college gave me some left over cat grass seeds (I had never heard of cat grass before). I think it is more for indoor cats, though I still grew it, once grown, placed the container with the grass in outside and my cat sat there eating it (to my suprise.. wasn't sure if she would or not!). bectil

My vines started to go like that, as I think they had powdery mildew - I can't imagine this weather doing them any good. bectilThanks for that tip! I'll have to keep an eye out for another male flower opening then, because I'm sure they've all opened and died again The few female ones that I saw earlier aren't close to opening yet so hopefully I'll get a male flower before that! I would be happy with getting two! Lol. That's all I need. I'm definitely going to try again if these ones don't work. Yes, the leaves are still nice and green. It's just where the plants looked really full before, with all the leaves and vines sort of standing up, now there's all gaps in between leaves and stuff. I think it's just because the vines have grown a bit more so the leaves are spreading out more. Hopefully anyway! I don't think the weather is good for them. The soil is meant to be kept moist, but I think it's probably been a bit too wet for them and then a bit too dry.

bectil, we grow cat grass even though our cats have access to the outdoors with plenty of grass around. Penny mainly stays indoors & eats it - it helps with her hairballs - & oddly Lexie, although she eats grass outside, will eat it on occasion. A friend doesn't bother will cat grass, she puts clumps of grass, from a wild patch of the garden in pots in her cat run

My mam loves gardening, she has the patio full of plants, there's cacti and various others inside and she has a polytunnel and veg patch. We are currently building an enclosure where she will have fruit trees and more veggies with netting to keep the birds (and cats!!) out. Charlie loves to sleep on the warm soil in the polytunnel. We also have a plum tree, pear tree, cooking apple and 2 eating apple trees as well as herb pots.

I might actually start doing that soon.

I can grow grass...does that count as gardening? I can grow grass, its dead easy Oh I don't know, our lawn gets patchy & plenty of weeds whilst the actual ornamental grasses spread very easily - I've even had to take them out the lawn!!
