I meant anxiety in general not in just response to a specific stimulus, although even then we can have a lot of 'emotional power' as I am sure you are well aware.

Well thanks for the advice, we have already tried the rubber mats and placing them apart but obviousley we cannot cover the entire kitchen, once the mats are removed then riley's back end starts shaking and there is no way he will walk on the floor so the problem starts all over again, we do ignore his behaviour because we realise that it will just make the problem much worse for him, but sometimes it is very hard to ignore him when he is so scared, but on the whole we do ignore him and to be honest it dosn't make any difference at all. I have always stayed very calm because i don't want to make a big thing out of it.
I also know that dogs pick up on your emotions but i have always stayed very calm. So my emotions are not reflecting onto Riley at all.
I agree with Charlotte i think this is a problem with rough collies, and i dont think riley will ever lose this fear, all we can do is try and work around it and make his life a little less scary.

Sorry, I misunderstood what you meant. Unfortunately it sounds like something that will always spook him. I suppose it's like when we slip on ice. I'm not sure about you but I hate walking on ice lol! Management sounds like a good plan We're looking at getting the laminate in the kitchen changed to Lino ASAP but obviously that isn't ideal for everyone. Is there nowhere else in the house he can stay? Or is the kitchen the most appropriate place?

Well the kitchen and hall is more appropriate, too many cables in the living room and i also have to seperate him from the cat, they get on although Riley as started chasing Sindy now so i wouldn't want to leave them together whilst i wasn't around.Riley as the run of the kitchen and utility area and its also nice and cool out their.
The socks maybe something to think about i will take a look, thanks x

Ah that makes sense, I'd be the same regarding leaving them both together, poor Sindy! My brothers dog was a bugger for chasing his cats when she was a young pup. She's about 10 months now and has grown out of it. The socks sound like they could work let us know how you get on

Just letting those interested know how Alfie is getting on with the DAP collar. We have noticed very little difference in him. There were times when he was in his crate, he was good, though other times he was distressed - I don't think it is down to the DAP collar though, more what we gave him to occupy him and how we left the house. I'm going to try a Thundershirt next, see how that goes. Someone I garden for rescues dogs, and she suggested to give him Scullcap & Valerian Tablets - Another option to try if the Thundershirt doesn't work bectil

bectil That's a shame that you haven't seen much improvement. I've read good things about the Thundershirts, lets hope it works for Alfie.
