Vet called today and said as he's been on medication for four weeks now that we could do the repeat blood test any time - so he's having it tomorrow. Nervous!!

My internet and phone signal is rubbish at home tonight so quick update before I loose it again! Bit of a mixed bag at the vets this evening - some bad news, but mostly good Vet said he would be happy if Alfie was his dog. Will update properly at work tomorrow! |

Oh no, sorry to have worried you.... it was mostly good news. His bloods have improved. Infact one of his kidney levels (my understanding is that there are 3 main ones that the blood tests look for).. has returned right back to normal.
His urine 'dipstick' test wasn't very good though... his pH is too high and he has glucose, protein and blood in his urine. It could just be a UTI, but we don't really know yet. My vet is sending it away for culturing.

Good news about the bloods Sorry to hear dipstick is not as good. Hope it is nothing significant when you get the results of the further tests. Other the UTI can it be anything else? |

caz2golden my vet said it was quite unusual to see a promising result in bloods but marked decline in the urine, but 'unusual' is my Alfie all over! He said as the glucose in his urine is back up, whilst his blood glucose is still fine, it appears that the ''fanconi syndrome'' is present again (his urine was clear of glucose end of Feb). I wondered if it was perhaps also because I have swapped almost all of Alfie's treats out for fruit which is obviously high in natural sugars, but then I guess that would reflect in the blood glucose and it's not. The blood could be because Alfie has a slightly enlarged prostate, they saw that on the ultrasound he had back in December and he was going to be neutered when he was back to full fitness again, but obviously that's on the back burner now as anything non-life threatening requiring a GA is a no-go. My vet is also reluctant to give him the implant at the moment as it could affect blood results and we want to get a really clear picture of anything changes incase they're kidney related. I have been Googling (of course!) and found that high urine pH can be caused by a low-meat, high carb diet and that's exactly what Alfie is eating now. Also says it's a very common indicator of an UTI and can be caused by ACE inhibitor also (the tablets Alfie is on). So really I guess it points to an UTI, but we will have to wait and see. These are Alfie's bloods from Feb compared with yesterdays.   I do not understand them much - but can see the UREA and Phosphorous are down. The CREA is raised from last time though. His BUN/CREA has changed from 21 to 10 but I don't know if this is a good thing or not (it was 21 back in December too). Unfortunately I only got a copy emailed to me this morning, I didn't think to ask for one at the vets yesterday, so am just going through it myself now. Overall, I think the news is positive. Vet was happy. He said we cannot expect miracles, but a happy Alfie and improvement on bloods is good. Naturally I just want more of an improvement, and for urine to be good too.
