Lucky me to live in Harlow! Luckily the affected area isn't anywhere near where I go. But how long before it spreads?
There are gypsy horses in those fields, I heard that they have something to do with the ticks arriving here.

Definitely nasty. I note there are various strains with canis being the one of interest at the moment but I wonder if there are felis versions as well?

Wonder how it has come from mainland Europe? Have they come off birds that have come over from mainland Europe? Is it the result of the relaxing of the quarantine laws? Now dogs can walk straight off planes, trains and ferries when in the past they would have to stay in a kennel where such ticks would have been found and destroyed! Unsure about the horses alfiemummy, unless they have also been transported across the channel! They could spread them though if the horses are moved about etc.

Now dogs can walk straight off planes, trains and ferries when in the past they would have to stay in a kennel where such ticks would have been found and destroyed! Hmm, sort of. Prior to 2012, all dogs entering the UK under the Pet Passport Scheme had to be treated for ticks & tapeworms 1-5 days prior to travel. When the quarantine rules were relaxed on the 1st January 2012, some bright spark thought it'd be a good idea to drop the tick treatment requirement So since that date, dogs entering the UK have only had to have a tapeworm treatment. So, of course, now we've got some lovely exotic ticks on our shores. I'm really surprised it's taken so long to be totally honest. And if the quarantine laws stay as they are, we've got rabies to look forward to aswell...

Very worrying. I wonder how long we can expect to wait before it's spread across the country Presumably all standard tick prevention measures will work against these ticks though, so it's going to have to be a new pre-walk routine I guess. I can't use spot on treatments for Pepper, so will be spraying all three dogs with tick repellant spray before every walk.

My vet (the one mentioned in the article) has recommended that you ensure your dog has a treatment that covers ticks and they should be fine. And of course to check your dog for ticks - and get them checked if they seem off colour.
Has made me re-think my idea of going natural for Alfie's flea/tick treatment. I currently use a spot on and don't think I'll want to change now with something like this so close. He has never (touch wood) had a tick before and I don't want to go changing things and find out it's not as effective.

That's the problem I have alfiemummy. I don't know of any tick treatments that aren't spot ons. I've only ever found the one tick on Ellie last year, so I'm not sure if our natural method can be completely relied upon or not! I need to speak with my vet I think.

My other problem is that the vet recommends a treatment that kills ticks within 24 hours, mine is 48 hours (Frontline) so I'll need to have a re-think anyway.
Never know what to do for the best!

No, this is true! We're at the vets this week for weight checks so I might ask then.

With Phoebe getting burn like mark last time I used it I am not letting spot on near her.

I get the Skinny Spray from My Itchy Dog. But I think it's CSJ that make it so you could probably get it elsewhere too.

This is the very reason I've always been anti pet passports...
