Animals I love: Cats
Pets I own: Have always had cats as far as I can remember. Currently the owners of a Tabby kitten called "Ringo". He was born Weds 29/04/2015 & we got him Thursday 18/06/2015. He's just over 3 months old at time of writing. He is light grey with black Tiger stripes & he has black rings around his tail & back legs, hence the name "Ringo". Nothing to do at all about The Beatles. Now he has started to develop a beigey colour in his coat, & in some photos & different light, for some reason seems to have a slight orangey/ginger colour.
He's a right character, always friendly & loving & happy to see us, always following us around the house, always charging around & playing with his toys & stalking anything that moves, & then when he gets tired, jumps up for a fuss. Couldn't ask for a better cat. He's perrrfect.

We googled Metacam the other day & unfortunately it says it should only be given for 4 days. On Thursday we are going to ask how long a gap it has to be before he can have some more. It must be so painful at times. I'd hate to have a broken leg & no pain killers.

Christmas tree? oh yeah... won't that be fun with the baubles & other dangley bits lol. I haven't had a Christmas tree in my house for years - why not? - 7 cats!!! Ringo's wound is healing really well - I'm always amazed at how fast animals heal. I hope that the vet gives you something else for Ringo's pain now that the Metacam has finished.

I'm sure the vet will have something else to help Ringo with pain relief (((HUGS))) Don't be scared to ask ~ or insist even I often take a list of questions to ask as well if I have more than one thing on my mind - there's nothing more frustrating than knowing you had, say, three things to ask the vet about and only two will come to mind Wound looks like it's healing lovely....won't be long before your baby boy is back to his normal self Follow the vets instructions to the letter tho'.....we made the mistake of thinking Lily's broken leg was ok and started giving her more time out of the crate than she should and it knocked her back a little.....and vet Simon gave us such a rollicking As I said earlier this is just a TINY amount of time that Ringo is going to be living in his crate compared to the long life ahead of him so don't let yourself feel guilty or anything

J1M I'm not sure about only giving Metacam (or Loxicom which is another trade name for it) for only 4 days. Ours do get it for longer periods. There is a potential risk associated with it & that is kidney issues but don't panic about this as that is more about long term use. Several of our cats with abscesses or other injuries have had it for a few weeks with no problems but our Penny (now 16) was first started on it in October 2010 for arthritis & has had it daily in varying doses since then. Sadly she was diagnosed with kidney disease earlier this year & is now off the Metacam but the balance of a comfortable life for nearly 6 years & possibly an overall shorter life span against a potentially longer but more painful one was a no brainer. She's now taking other meds for her kidneys & additionally hyperthyroidism (also diagnosed this year after the kidneys!), in fact one of those is a carefully regulated does of aspirin which is even even more dangerous for cats as they can easily overdose on it but it works as a painkiller for her arthritis & as a clot preventer for her heart issues (caused by the kidney & thyroid problems). But she is still able to chase the neighbour's young cat out of the garden & tell our other cats whose boss! Who knows what would have happened without her taking it, it could still be the same. However your post made me read the leaflet in the latest box we have & it does say that for post-op purposes then it should only be given for 4 days but can be indefinite for chronic issues such as arthritis etc. I've learnt something from your post

That's interesting, as Jasper was given Loxicom (10mls once a day for two weeks) and the rest we have to keep in case he buggers his hip up again. (Long story) Just goes to show how you should always read the leaflet that comes with the meds. Hope Ringo is still doing ok today.

Ringo seems not so bad today without the Metacam. Cheryl spends the most time with him during the day as i'm at work, & she says he seems to only limp really badly when he 1st gets up after laying down for a while which is to be expected, but after he's eaten or used his tray he doesn't seem to limp as bad as he did when he 1st got up. I think Ringo's doing ok as can be expected after what he's had done. I thought i'd google cat pain & I came across this article. healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/archive/2012/02/03/how-to-know-if-your-cat-is-in-pain-and-what-to-do-about-it.aspxWe got the post op xrays today from Ringo's surgeon that shows where his pins go. He goes back there on Thursday for his 2nd post op check so we'll see how Andrei thinks he's getting along. Last night.

Awwww lovely photo Reminds me so much of that sideways look Lily will often give me when she's about to charge off and do something naughty Last week she did it then skimmed all the way to the top of the living room curtains (first time in over a year!) and then looked over her shoulder from the top as if if to say ''I can still do it Mum!'' Loxicom! That's the name I was trying to think of yesterday Lily (with broken leg) was on it throughout her crate rest and old girl Misty had it every day in her food for the last 6 months or so she was with us to help with arthritis in her near foreleg.

Hi all. I felt rough & had a migraine when we got back from Ringo's 2nd post op check so spent the rest of yesterday in bed in the dark & really didn't feel like sitting in front of a PC screen. Ringo's doing fine so far & Andrei (surgeon) was happy with his progress yesterday. I was a little concerned 1st thing yesterday morning as Ringo seemed to have an open wound around his pin that goes in to his hip but Andrei said it was ok as it normally happens when the pins go in at that angle & due to the cats movement, mmm, still not sure I like the idea of it though. Surely an open wound, no matter how small is open to infection. Ringo wasn't happy at all when Andrei started to take the old blue covering off his pins & as quick as lightning, Ringo whipped his front right paw round to scratch Andrei who pulled his hand out the way just in time, looked at Ringo & just said "oh yes, I remember you now, the Bengal cross" lol. The surgery clipped Ringo's claws while he was under anesthetic so they could handle him easier after he came round. He was also happy with the way Ringo was walking around the room as he's starting to put more weight on his leg & isn't limping so bad. I asked Andrei if he could change Ringo's blue cover, he took it off anyway to check the pins & he said Ringo didn't need any cover on it anyway now. He put some clean covering on the pin ends mainly to stop them catching on Ringo's cage or something. Overall, Andrei was happy with his progress so far which makes us happy. 1 week down, 3 more to go. Then it's more xrays before the pin removal just to make sure. That's roughly about another £450, although £350 or so is just for the xrays. Unfortunately we've had to put Ringo in his cage a bit more often the last 2 days. We can definitely tell he isn't taking any meds any more. He won't lay still for long & wants to play & do things & go places he used to. At least in his cage we know he isn't going to hurt himself, it's for his own good.

Good news that the vet is happy with Ringo's progress, not so good for the cost of the x-rays to come, j1m He's obviously feeling better wanting to be so active. I wish we could explain to our pets when we need them to do something for their own good, including not swiping the vet that's helping him

Good news that things are starting to heal First time I saw all that metalwork sticking out of my Lily's shoulder and foreleg I felt sick It certainly helps though and it's amazing just how well our animals adapt to it. Main thing is to NOT feel sorry for Ringo and keep him crated as much as possible!!! Feeling sorry for him and letting him out may lead to him damaging the leg irreparably and lead to amputation or worse Extra costs for the x-ray are a bit of a bugger tho' I was very lucky with Lily in that she was a foster cat and the charity paid all the vet bills....there's no way we could have afforded them otherwise It certainly opened my eyes to how quickly treatment mounts up and my current two are both insured now just in case (((BIG HUGS))) to darling Ringo He's looking great....won't be too long before he's fully fixed once more
