Animals I love: Cats
Pets I own: Have always had cats as far as I can remember. Currently the owners of a Tabby kitten called "Ringo". He was born Weds 29/04/2015 & we got him Thursday 18/06/2015. He's just over 3 months old at time of writing. He is light grey with black Tiger stripes & he has black rings around his tail & back legs, hence the name "Ringo". Nothing to do at all about The Beatles. Now he has started to develop a beigey colour in his coat, & in some photos & different light, for some reason seems to have a slight orangey/ginger colour.
He's a right character, always friendly & loving & happy to see us, always following us around the house, always charging around & playing with his toys & stalking anything that moves, & then when he gets tired, jumps up for a fuss. Couldn't ask for a better cat. He's perrrfect.

I thought it was a bit early but Ringo hasn't had his pins out. I now think Andrei was getting his dates mixed up. Ringo had his operation on 29th of September so he has only had the pins in his leg for 4 weeks. Andrei said that from the xrays (another £325), Ringo's leg was healing well, but not yet ready for the pins to come out as it's still to fragile & would break again too easily. While Ringo was under the anesthetic for the xrays, Andrei took out the pin that was up by Ringo's hip, the one that was causing the wound, & we are on strict orders that Ringo stays in his cage & is not allowed to be active. Ringo has just spent the last 3 weeks in his cage so nothing will change there. We were only able to have Ringo out of his cage & on the sofa during the day just after his op because he was doped up to the eyeballs & did nothing but sleep, but since his medication stopped he has been caged all the time. The only time he has to go around the living room for a sniff, is when we clean his cage out, & that only takes a few minutes. We have a litter tray with a lip on it but Ringo still manages to get litter everywhere. He digs with both front paws throwing it behind him & after he digs in it, he shakes his paws flicking litter all around his cage. The lip helps but hasn't stopped the mess. Andrei has said he wants to see Ringo in another 4 weeks time for yet more expensive xrays at £325 a time & hopefully have his pins out then. So it's another month to go with him all locked up. Being only a kitten, Ringo must be bored stiff, to help keep him amused, we've put a couple of his Kong toys in with him. Those he only chews & flicks around with his front paws. Ringo's favourite at the moment is his "wubba" duck. We need to try something because we've noticed he's starting to get a little pent up "play" aggression in him. He wants to play but he can't. I just wish he could understand why.

Oh poor baby (((HUGS))) It IS very frustrating waiting for those bones to heal but once it's done Ringo will have all the time in the world to play and run around and *gulp* jump. To be honest I thought it might be too early to remove the pins as our Lily had hers in for a few months BUT hers were in the left foreleg and broken in two/three places as a result of a car accident. I couldn't remember the date Ringo had his accident and thought perhaps it had been longer than just four weeks, as you say Or that beoing a young cat his bones had healed quicker than Lily's who was an adult and VERY big (part Maine Coon we reckoned). Ouch to the extra expense of x-rays tho' I sometimes think they think of a number then double it...then chuck on a bit of VAT!!!!!! When we were fostering the oldies for PARRT the charity paid any vet bills (otherwise no way could we afford it!!!) and it certainly opened my eyes to just how quickly they mount up That's why I got both my horrors insured because otherwise we simply couldn't afford vet bills if they ever had an accident

Because of Ringo being a kitten & his bones still growing, & me not being a vet & thinking they know best is why I didn't question it with Andrei. Wish I had now, might have been able to save ourselves an un-necessary expense. I also hope Ringo's leg is ok with just the 2 pins on the clamp instead of 3. Just hope nothing wants to try twisting his bone at the break weakening what's already been healed.

J1m, Sorry to hear you've had more expense but at least its good news that the x-rays confirmed that the bone is healing well. As to entertainment I had a look back the post from Alfie's owners about how they kept him amused
Alfie's pinned leg was a front one so I don't know if it would be appropriate for Ringo.

That sounds like a good idea using a child's activity toy. It just needs to be something he can play with while sitting or laying down so he doesn't use his back legs. Might have to look at the FreeAds when I get home from work to see what baby toys are available.

I think Ringo is being very good - luckily he is a kitten and hasn't had much freedom before the accident. That's a good idea getting a child's activity toy to keep him interested in playing a bit. Going in the right direction, that's the main thing. Love his pics.

Youve gone quiet on us J1M hope Ringo is ok ? Hiya. I Am doing an update tonight as a development has happened in the last couple of days. Thankfully nothing happened over the last week & half so there was nothing really to add, until today. We will know more tonight after coming back from the vet, but when I came home from work the night before last, I noticed that Ringo was not leaving his pins alone & saw that the wound around one of his pins had opened a little & looks like it could be infected. I didn't like the look of it so we have an appointment for 6.15pm tonight. We sent Toachim House an email with some photos & asked for some antibiotics for him. They were good & rang Ringo's proper vet & let us pick up a course of antibiotics from them instead of having to go miles to Toachim. Unfortunately we've had to put a cone on him as he won't leave it alone. Ringo's original one was slightly to small & he could still get to his wound so we had to go to our proper vet to get a size 2. Everything seemed to be going fine & we are now down to 2 weeks left, it was going too good to be true it seems. I shall do an update tonight when we come back from seeing Andrei.

Naughty Ringo. Hopefully its not too serious and the antibiotics & cone do the trick. Look forward to hearing your update.
We thought we could remove Roman's cone after a while, so long as we were keeping an eye on him only to find that when we thought he'd been snoozing curled up (back towards us) he'd been nibbling the stitches (like Ringo it was a back leg) Sneaky!! Luckily this wasn't pins but an op. stitching & the vet had put in extra stitches & it was well on the the way to being healed so we were lucky.

Hey there, hope the vets appointment goes well. Poor wee guy having to wear the cone but it is for the best. My dog once had to wear a cone for about a week because she had an infected insect bite. Everyone thought I was mean keeping it on her haha but any time it was off she kept trying to lick it and that just makes it worse. Better to be safe than sorry!
Let us know how the vets goes.

We got Ringo to the vet but didn't see Andrei as he was busy in the big mobile MRI scanner they had outside. She agreed the outer bar for the pins was rubbing making it sore but when she spoke to Andrei, he didn't want to move the pins incase it did more harm than good. I was concerned that even though Ringo is caged, he can still move about to much & I'm see his flesh slowly getting ripped by it moving around his pin. Normally, skin moves around a limb when it's moved but Ringo has pins through his skin. I was also concerned about it being infected. They took Ringo out the back & cleaned his wound & brought him back out. They gave us antibiotics for him, Nisamox at 1 tablet twice a day, Veraflox liquid once a day, some more Trazodone liquid to help calm Ringo down so he's not so active & Metacam for his pain. We can't wait till Ringo has his pins out so all the holes can heal up & stop making complications for him. He's in enough discomfort with a broken leg without having extra wounds & infections. Ringo's appointment for his pin removal is for the 23rd so that's only 10 days away now. It can't come soon enough. These last 2 months have seemed like an eternity.

Aww poor Ringo & you J1M & cheryl. Hopefully any infection has been caught & the meds do the trick & he'll be fighting fit, healing well so that the pins can come out on 23rd. Hopefully he takes his medicine like a good boy.

Ooooh that looks nasty (probably looks worse than it is) but I'm sure the antibiotics will sort it out really quickly He's a very handsome wee man

Hi everyone, been a bit of a development, hopefully a good one. We had to take Ringo Back to Toachim House Surgery today at 11am because over the weekend his wound seemed to be getting even bigger & he needed it cleaned of discharge properly. Ringo, with me holding him, would let us clean it to a certain extent but when the cleaning got a bit deeper, holding him down too much just upset him & we didn't want to traumatise him. It's got to the point where sometimes, when Ringo wakes up from a nap & stretches, looking at his wound has started to make us feel ill. We wasn't happy with it still so made another appointment. We took Ringo to see Andrei (surgeon) at 11am & suggested to him that something needs to be done & we are now concerned for Ringo's welfare & well being. He would be in so much pain if it wasn't for the Metacam, & then the Metacam won't get rid of all the pain. Andrei thinks that his body keeps on trying to reject the metal pins. We have left Ringo at the surgery & will be picking him up at 6.45pm this evening. Ringo's appointment to have his pins out was originally for next Monday, a week today, so Andrei is going to take some more xrays of Ringo's leg (another £325 just for the xrays) & hopefully take the pins out today. With the pins removed Ringo's wound will finally have a chance to start healing. That'll make spending £1000 just on xrays alone. I expect we'll have to keep Ringo caged for another couple of weeks at least for his wounds to heal properly, but at least with the pins gone, his quality of life will be a bit better. Ringo's behaviour has been so very good whilst being caged over the last 2 months, he's been a diamond, couldn't ask for a better cat. He's been living quietly in his cage, which is in the living room to be with us all the time. There's been no crying to be let out, no climbing the cage, nothing. We wanted him to feel like he is still included in family life. Our living room is only small, but his cage is between the back door & the TV & only about 4 foot from the sofa, so he's always close by to us all. We've always laid by the cage a few time each during each day the stoke him & make a fuss of him. While one of us cleans the cage of flicked litter & sorts his tray out, another one of us will lay or sit Ringo on the floor & make a fuss of him. As he has to have his cone on, he loves being scratched & stroked all around his neck more than ever & it makes him purr really loud, but some of that could be amplified by the cone collar. Even getting Ringo back in his cage is no problem, no fights, nothing, just a little handful of "Deamies" treats. We can't wait to pick him up tonight. We think that even Ringo will be relieved to have got rid of his pins once & for all.
