It's so frustrating! This morning on a facebook pet group (selling, studding, etc), someone was selling 5 week old Staffy cross pups. Several people commented that puppies shouldn't be leaving their mother that young because it wouldn't be good for them in any way, so she commented back that she wasn't a breeder, because she only breeds her own pets. She also said that 2 pups had been in their new home (yes home, she sold two 4 week old puppies to the same person ) for a week now and were doing fine. Sad thing is there was then a flood of people defending her, saying she was only doing whats best for her dog and her puppies. It amazed me how many people said it was OK, how many had bought 5 week old puppies, and how many had sold 5 week old puppies. She also said when she has her next litter she won't be advertising on these pages because of how stupid everyone is.
It's not the first time I've seen people say that on these pages, that they are not a breeder. Since when are you not a breeder if you breed your own pets? I wonder if people think puppy farms make a breeder only.

It does sound like she is infact a breeder, maybe just trying to act like she needs to get rid of the pups because she can't be bothered to look after them? I am 100% against puppy farms - not the dogs just the breeders. It does all sound rather sad

That's why you should never trust people who sell puppies on the Internet!! Its why I don't trust people who do that. They're not good, selling puppies online who are way too young!!
Plus she was criticizing people.
Hope she doesn't sell on Facebook.

Strange woman not thinking she is a breeder! Sad that some pups went to their new homes at only 4 weeks old; it's way too young and they miss out on so much from their Mum. Awful thing is that this breeder will go on to let her dog have another litter straight away probably, so she doesn't have the puppies welfare at heart, she is money motivated -the quicker the pups go the quicker the dog can have another litter. I bought my Patterdale Terrier cross from an advert on a website called epupz. When I went to see him and bought him the owner said he was the only one left as someone hadn't turned up for him so he was readvertised. When I asked for his date of birth I realised that he was only 6 weeks old so his brothers and sisters had gone really early.

I agree with you Sarah. For a one off occasion if a dog/cat gets unintentionally pregnant I would say they are not a breeder. But as the person concerned is saying that she won't use these means to advertise in the future seems to imply that she intends deliberately breeding (someone I would definitely call a breeder) or doesn't care enough to take care of her pets so that they don't get accidently pregnant!
Also the very worrying part is that she doesn't listen to advice that the pups are too young to leave their mother & others are defending her view!
BT, I know there are a few forum members who breed pedigree cats & have their own websites but do occasionally use some of the more general websites. However they do take care over who their kittens go to (family ages, home environment etc,) & ensures that the kittens are of a suitable age to leave their mum. Its a difficult one. Pups, kittens or any animal sold over the internet needs careful checking out by the person buying them but its not only down to the internet there were puppy farms before the internet, adverts in papers/pet shops etc. also need careful checking out.

Maybe she should be named and shamed on here for all to know. 4 weeks is way to young for a pup to leave it's mother, it will miss out on vital lessons learned from mum. This person sounds like a back yard breeder, what will happen when compulsory micro-chipping comes into force...will she try to have them chipped at 4 weeks?

I agree with johnl, we have no idea if the pups will have missed vital lessons - for no thought of their own.

People's lack of responsibility and utter stupidity really make me cringe -.-' However, these are the sorts of things I will have to deal with, with a level head when I finally get into Training and Behaviour. What is wrong with the world? Say I had a bitch, and that bitch got caught by a dog and had puppies. She was then spayed or never had another litter. I wouldn't class myself as a breeder (all Hypothetical of course lol) However, if she actively breeds her dog then she is going to have MORE litters then yes, she is a breeder. And a bloody irresponsible one at that. I have friends who are BREEDERS and they only breed their own dogs. I don't understand this woman's logic!? Good thing I wasn't on that page, she's get a right talking to

A breeder = anyone who has an animal which is impregnated and gives birth to offspring.
The same way parent = anyone who who has a child

It is ok for people to look for breeders online, but just not buy/sell them, in my opinion.

I wonder what she thinks a breeder is then, if it's not someone who allows their own dog to have several litters?! Some people's logic is baffling. Like Johnl said, I would think she'd be classed a backyard breeder. Is there no-one she can be reported to?
