What product do you use? I had to stop using Frontline as cooper would rub himself on the floor and then his belly would go all red aand he would scratch a lot. We now use Stronghold and he seems find on that one.

No, I don't think that it is normal. Might I ask why you treat him for fleas, does he have them? I have not treated Oscar for fleas in 2 years and he has never gotten fleas, nor do I worm him regularly and he has never gotten those either. I do not see the need in flea treating a dog if they do not have fleas, do your parent's treat you for headlice when you don't have them? No. Unnecessary chemicals being applied to a dogs skin. Please tell me that you have not been applying flea treatments to Barley's skin with his skin problems?

No my dogs have never done anything like that. I guess I would question this with the vet when you see them for booster. I am trying another option to the chemicals this year.
Which product are you using, over counter or from vets?
Like Bextull has put I would not treat unless you suspect a problem with fleas or are you using for local tick issues (there are some hot spots in the surrounding area).
I also would agree with Bextull that I would not treat if Barley is having a current issue with his skin.
Unlike Bextull I do regularly worm (every 3 months)

Neither of my dogs did this when I was using spot on treatment. However, I've stopped using this altogether for the same reasons as Bextull gave. The feature in last month's magazine enforced my thoughts on using spot on treatments - if the chemicals used can melt some plastics, I don't want them anywhere near my dogs' skin. Yes, I know that water can damage some plastics, but I don't think that's quite the same.
As neither of my dogs have fleas, I started using BIlly No Mates on them in order to repel any fleas they may encounter. It's a herbal supplement that I add to their food and does them no damage. Perhaps you could consider using this, or Dorwest's Garlic & Fenugreek tablets if Barley doesn't have fleas? That way there's still some form of protection, but you're not risking irritating his skin anymore?
Like Caz, I also worm regularly.

Orpheous, The Dorwest product you just advised looks really good especally for a dog with skin issues I think I would ask about what the vet thought of these at the vets appointment I have never used them myself though. www.dorwest.com/Products/GF/garlic-and-fenugreek-tablets-for-dogs-and-catsI am trying the billy no mates myself but unable to comment how good it is yet. Edit:- dosage is quite high though, could add up cost wise!!

Like Bextull has said PP, I wouldn't be using flea treatment on your dog if he is suffering with skin problems(?) This may not be helping his skin problems!! I worm all my dogs, cats, horses, and ferrets regularly. I use Frontline on my dogs and cats? Personally PP, I think you are doing right in flea-ing Barley, but maybe try a different one and seek advice from your vet I think he could just be having an excited moment after doing this, I don't think it is anything to worry about at all, for example, both my dogs have an excited 10-15 minutes or more of playing around the house after they have been bathed, they do this sometimes after walks too. I don't think you should worry

I have to admit, I haven't used the Dorwest product either, but I have heard very good things about it and would definitely consider using it. If I wasn't using the BNM, I'd probably be using Dorwest. The only thing that puts me off is the dosage amount, as you have to use quite a few tablets at once. It probably wouldn't be too bad for a household with one dog, but with two dogs I think it would cost me too much for both of my dogs.

Expense is one of the most important things you have to consider!!
How would you review on BNM Orpheous? Good? Bad? Alright? Good but...?

No, when I used those products, none of my animals did that. Sounds like its somewhat irritating to him.

i use fiprospot, he gets flead and wormed regularly because where he walks he does encounter ticks and he goes to lots of shows and has picked up fleas from shows before also he has this thing about finding hedgehogs and he gets covered in fleas of of them and gets prickles in his nose but he doesnt care, we uses to use frontline but went off that as it was too expensive he does nothave as bad a 'reaction' to fiprospot than he did with frontline. will look into the herbal alternatives, his skin has cleared up at the moment and the fiprospot only gets put on the back of his neck and his belly is where the skin issue was.

PP, why don't you try and see what your vet has to say about it? That way, you will know that you are getting proper advice (no offence everyone - but the professionals will know what to provide, etc). When you say 'he does not have as bad a 'reaction' to fiprospot than he did with frontline' - do you mean, his skin does react to the fiprospot badly, but not as bad as it would if it was the frontline which was being treated? If so, then I don't think you should be using it at all, but should be changing and looking into other products which would suit Barley's skin especially if he suffers with skin probems regularly/occasionally anyway. Good luck! x

I mean he does not go as mad when he has fiprospot and there is less liquid in fiprospot than frontline so quicker to apply. he tolerates fiprospot more.

Oh right PP, I see. Well either way, I wish you luck! I use Frontline and used it with all my dogs. Although with my Akitas and Miniature Jack Russell, we used spot-on but changed to Frontline as it was better for my bunch!
So, I am sorry, I am not much help! I will still keep up with the posts and post on this thread though to see how you're both getting on (meaning you and Barley).

AL - Well all I can really say about BNM is that neither of my dogs had fleas when I started them on it and they haven't picked them up after being on it. It's a repellent as it contains mint, seaweed, fenugreek, neem leaves and lemon balm, all of which fleas don't like apparently. It also repels ticks and mites too.
