spider;your soil must be perfect for roses. Beautiful roses and peonies tonib!I love roses and was lucky enough to find some at a local garden centre a few years ago for about £3.50 each, they have beautiful perfume and I couldn't believe my luck.On asking why they were so cheap,it was because they were un named,I didn't mind one bit,I'm not a plant snob.My two other favourite garden flowers are peonies and blue scabious, and I love to have flowers in the house.I seem to have lost my Barnsley Lavatera, they are so pretty,it was only young so may have cut it down by mistake so will look for another. After our hols the shrubs have gone crazy, its amazing, sadly my peonies were in bud when we left, and I had meant to tell daughter to make use of them,so most were finished after the fortnight.I find those spring up bags for putting clippings in a boon,I filled a large and too small ones and took them to the local tip to empty, simples! Seem to have got the bit between our teeth with the tidying up the gardens,so if the weather holds,it should soon be done, fingers crossed.

Been studying the Future Learn Soils course (albeit getting started very late) - very interesting and gives me a lot if ideas for the balcony garden. Been getting about 3 - 5 tomatoes a day now and about a strawberry a week haha. Also loads of chillies which we have mostly been freezing for making into sauce or something later. Kohl rabid have been threatening to become kohl rabid for ages but never achieved it so I might replace them with spinach. Also growing leeks and spring onion in the kitchen from kitchen leftovers

Autumn is on it's way! Driving to one of my gardens yesterday afternoon, which is in the countryside and I noticed the ferns in the side verges are starting to turn yellow, and many trees are now showing some autumn colour.

I had just that same thought yesterday too! Walking home from work at 8.45am I noticed a couple of the small shrubs outside the vets were getting paler. Swifts have left us (Saturday 15th was my last date ) and I've noticed the Robin have come through their summer moult and started singing their melancholy winter song again. A guy on the birdwatching site two weeks ago mentioned it being a possible really bad winter this year because of the El Nino in the Pacific.....but heck, they say that every year, don't they There's been nowt in the Express yet and THEY are always right about bad weather, aren't they?

No, the Swifts have gone now but still loads of Swallow and House & Sand Martins The mornings are definitely darker though I first noticed this last week as I walked to work at 5.30am last Monday - it was only just getting light.

I saw a rose in bloom the other day - walked past it and then it registered and I thought ''Err hold on...'' and I went back a few steps to double check Only saw my first flowering Daffodils last week but DID have Pot Marigold (Calendula) flowering in a sheltered spot in the allotment on 5th January. The couple of days of heavy frost did for it 11 days later mind.

Everything seems to be growing well this year, I think some serious pruning will be in order as well as possibly some rethinking of positioning! Trouble is the weeds are also growing well We had a load of spikes on our 2 Phormiums - they made/make it difficult to go up the steps from the patio t the path , so we walk the long way round over the lawn!!! It would be a shame to cut them down but it won't be long before they're finished now so we can cut the flower stalks off.
