I am coming to my wits end with barley's itching, as far as we know there is no cause for it, when i think we are on top of it, i find he has new scabs and red patches where he has started itching in a different place. he is on piriton which reduced his itching to start of with but the effect has worn off. Putting him on a grain free diet worked but again the effect has worn off, he definitely has no fleas, our washing powder has not changed, his beds and collars have all been washed, he has been bathed in soothing shampoo and nothing is working. in the summer his skin is itchy and in the winter his paws are itchy, other than taking him to the vet for expensive tests and stuff is there anything else we can try, such as supplements or something else along these lines. The vet suggested piriton and the does to use, which is 1 4mg tablet three times a day

All I can really say is that his skin is probably itchy in the summer because it is hot, he may develop heat rash, it is hay-fever season, (in dogs, the signs of hay-fever is itchy skin) and because he is probably sweltering in that big coat of his!
And in the winter, his paws may be irritating him because of walks in/on the ice and snow. You could try vaseline then, if you don't already.
Hope this gives you a little help...!

I don't think you have much choice - expensive tests and hopefully dignosis and correct treatment - or - watch your beloved dog suffer? I think he's been suffering from various things for quite a time.

I can't remember very rightly... was it before the old YD Forum? x

Has your vet checked for Demodetic mange? Is he smelly or does he have dry scaly skin? If he is scratching himself and causing sore patches you could try Hypocare on these area's. I would also recommend Dermocanis shampoo which is good for dry/scaly skin.
Unfortunately the only real solution is the expensive tests to check for allergies etc. You need to find the cause and treat that, otherwise it will just re-appear.
Is he insured? If so you may be able to claim for tests/treatment.

We're getting a lot of dogs in that are suffering from itchy skin a the minute, it is sometimes to do with the heat - jasper is one. Some are itching to the point of losing hair.
You could ring the vets and ask for advice. He might just need something stronger than piriton. Or it could be an allergy to something in the environment which would have to be diagnosed.
There's a product called HypoCare that we use at work on dogs to stop infections (it's in YD too) Also we use Dermadate spray from Doreen Paige to soothe sore skin. It's expensive but a lot of our customers say that they've seen a difference

My brothers staff pup had Dempsey and she itched all the hair away to reveal a red, sore scaly patch. There were small black dots on it (looked like blackheads) which the vets said was a sure fire way of diagnosing it.
Mite wise, it could also be cheylatiella (not sure if that's spelt right), which is a mite that lives under the skin. Apparently you can test for mites by running your hand down the spine and of the dog shudders, it could be due to the mites. It is highly contagious but pretty uncommon.

Sorry charlottte but have to disagree regarding testing for mites like that. The only way to actually see these demedex is to do a skin scrape, then look under a microscope. Our previous dog Tobi sadly had this, they looked like round patches of dandruff to the eye.

No I meant the cheylatiella mite, not Demodex mite scallywag. We've had a few dogs into work who have had it and as soon as you run your hand down their spine it sends a shudder down their back. Obviously not all dogs will show that (because someone will make a comment about me saying it). I didn't word that very well. Obviously you need a skin scrape to diagnose anything properly.

No he is not smelly, and no dry scaly skin I will give that a go Will also have a look at that yes he is insured, i think a while back we checked with our insurer and they would cover the cost of an allergy test but we decided not to take it as it all died down, it peaks at certain times, then others it does not seem to bother him

I think he's been suffering from various things for quite a time. He is not really suffering as he is very bright and happy in himself, he is more itching when we are not watching him
