Well, Jasper was in the vets today at 2 for his boosters. We've just changed to this vets and they're very good. However, most of my suspicions about him were true. He's about 1kg overweight. I've been battling with my mam as she feeds him something whenever she has it. Crisps, cake, biscuit, pastry etc. It really winds me up but now the vet has said he's not allowed titbits, I'm hoping she'll listen. Secondly, he has a bit of dental disease and needs a dental with possible extractions. I'm really annoyed about this because not long ago at our last vets all they said was that he had 'a bit of build up but nothing too bad'. I also suspected that he had an ear infection but apparently there's nothing there apart from a big clump of wax and hair far down the canal so I've been given drops and he'll get an ear flush and pluck when he gets the dental work. He had to be muzzled for the vet to look right down in his left ear but we don't know why because there was apparently nothing wrong with his ear - he was just being a wuss! Finally, he has a low heart rate, which she said could either be that he's super fit, or a slight thyroid problem. (I'm hoping he's just fit, but as he's slightly overweight, I doubt it ) So he's also going to have bloods done while he's under for his dental as well. So fair to say I'm feeling a bit sh*tty. And a bit worried for him having an anaesthetic.

At least you have found a vet who sounds excellent charlottte, don't worry too much, befor any opp, vets will check Jasper is healthy enough and monitor him closely. We have super vets, but Skip is still a wuss, much to our embarrassment. You may just be taken seriously now vet has said no more treats, people think they are being kind, not realising they are actually killing the dog with kindness,so good luck with that.Young neighbour is always filling his face with rubbish, and kept giving stuff to Skip,I went hairless at him after telling him countless times that sweets are bad for dogs and not to give him any more.Sooo frustrating.

I never thought about reposting in the nutrition section, logic has eluded me today Thanks scallywag we have to send a Pre Authorisation form off to Petplan as they don't always cover for dentals. We have to pay the scale and polish but they pay for any extractions. Which cost £37 per MINUTE! So we can't book him in until that's cleared :/

Thanks migsy he's been fine the last time he had anaesthetic. They also said they get more cautious at 9 years so they don't see a problem doing it now. Rather sooner than later. I was very impressed, they went through everything thoroughly and we were in a good 15-20 minutes. Our last vets were in, treat, out so it was nice to have time paid to you. That must have been extremely annoying! You had good right to give him a good telling off. It's crazy how little people seem to know about feeding animals. It's like they see them as little humans! Someone (I think our elderly neighbour) used to throw bones over the fence for Buddy (I think off the Sunday roast). They haven't made an appearance for a while however so hopefully it's the end of it!

Flipping heck charlottte,I didn't think P.P. paid anything towards extractions.Skip had some teeth removed a couple of years ago. Can't remember what it cost, but didn't faint so cant have been too bad. That's when we changed from Plaque Off to Logic Gel.

Well that's what I thought! I was dreading being told we needed a dental because we don't really have the money floating around to spare. However, as it was veterinary advised and our last vet didn't mention it they said they might pay for any extractions. Which was a nice surprise. Obviously I'm hoping he doesn't need any extractions but if they need to be done then its good to know the back up might be there (I don't wan to jinx it lol) Oh, i didnt know Skip had had dental work! Where do you get the logic gel from migsy? And do you rub onto teeth or just in the food like plaque off? When he gets it done ill be keeping on top of his teeth whether he likes it or not

Oh dear, poor Jasper, and poor you by the sounds of it! At least you have found out what are Jasper's lows so you can hopefully battle them away. There are plenty of things out there that can help solve problems - carrots are a good one for the dental problem! They really do keep dog's teeth clean! Just buy them from ASDA or somewhere similar. Good luck and hope your mum listens to the good vets... they know more about what they're talking about lol.

Poor Jasper! Sounds like he's had a rough day. It's annoying when people give your dog something that you know is bad for them. I shouted at my auntie last night for giving Ellie a bit of garlic bread lol. And then I took it off Ellie and binned it. But at least you'll get the insurance to pay for the dental, that's definitely a bonus I'm sure he'll be fine having the anaesthetic too, but I know why you're worried. I would be too.

I didn't think that PP (Petplan) paid for anything to do with teeth unless it was as a result of an accident...

He hasn't had the best day! He rolled in something lovely and smelly this morning though Orpheus so that was a high for him I guess Yes, it's really annoying! Especially when I've already told her that he's prone to diabetes at this age. And I didn't think either Fatamorgana. It's not listed as an exemption anywhere on our policy but I rang up and spoke to someone to double check. She said a scale and polish would need to be covered by us but any extractions would be covered by them.

Don't worry. Modern anaesthetics are pretty safe. I had an 11 year old dog under anaesthetic for xrays and knee op. Came back bouncing and starving.....

Oh that's good to know! Ive neve seen a dog bouncing after anaesthetic, usually just wobbling all over thenplace They said that they generally have no issues under 9yo (unless there is a medical condition, which so far doesn't apply to jasper). But avoid after 12yo. So it's being done now to hopefully prevent the need in future. Our last vet didn't mention any issues when he last had anaesthetic so that's good.

Hi charlottte, yes,it was quite a shock, thought Skip was going in for scale and polish,he is nearly 11 so would have been 9 at the time.He was absolutely fine, and his teeth have been plaque free ever since too.Think the vet gave us a sample of the Logic Gel when we picked him up after the extractions. We were impressed so have used it ever since.A tube lasts quite a long time,a soft finger brush comes with it,and you can brush it on or just rub some onto the teeth after the dogs evening meal. I have mentioned before about when we had 2 dogs,Sam the Border Collie had beautiful teeth, yet though on identical diet,Gemma our F.C.R. had to have her teeth cleaned every year by the vet.She was 13 when she died,so had it done a number of times.
