I went to clean Nibbles out today and I noticed something strange, she was sort of hobbling and off balance. On closer inspection I saw that some of her bedding had gotten entwined around one of her hind legs. The leg looks shrunken of sorts and she isn't using it but still moves around. It looks to be dead and she wont stop to let me remove the string. We will most likely be going to the vets tomorrow morning to get it amputated it seems, hopefully that's all that needs to be done.

Gosh that's very sad. Did it happen over night? When was the last time you saw her leg as normal? I hope she'll be ok.

Yes it would have been overnight or sometime yesterday. I checked her yesterday morning because she was making a racket which caused Charlie to be very interested in her. She seems fine as if she doesn't notice.

I just rang the vets t make an appointment and the receptionist said she would ring me back, that was 20 minutes ago. Why are they so laid back ! Nibbles is still doing ok, snuggled up in her bed.(Made of tissue not the fluffy stuff of death!)

Poor Nibbles Never heard of something like this before, hope she is ok! If that happened to Dobby I would also go to the vets.

As soon as I saw it I googled it and I found a few results of similar cases. With one the end of the leg fell off on its own.

I'm not entirely sure, it is dragging behind her. We have an appointment at half 8 so we'll see then.

What bedding do you use? If its the fluffy cotton wool like stuff, then wrapping round a limb is very common. Sadly many hamsters have lost limbs from this stuff, somehow its still legal to sell it, I don't understand why. Hope she's OK, thankfully lots of hammies manage quite well without one leg sending vibes for her x

Yes it was the fluffy stuff but I can definitely say I won't be using that again, looks like tissue from here on out.
She got the leg taken off, it cut right off, so now she has 3 1/2.
We brought Mrs.Woman along too and the vet said that she isn't ready yet and it might be a couple of weeks yet. So she must have gotten pregnant right when we started caring for her.

Hope Nibbles is recovering well from her op.
Glad to hear you've got Mrs. Woman checked out by the vet and they were able to give you a more accurate assessment of when she'll be due.

Oh poor girly, I'm sure she will get along OK though. I use tissue paper too, its much cheaper than the fluff too which is a bonus!

I don't get how they are allowed to sell that stuff if it can harm the hamster.

I don't get how they are allowed to sell that stuff if it can harm the hamster. It's the same with things like Rotastak cages. Those have killed loads of hamsters, and are downright cruel because they only offer a tiny bit of space. Even the RSPCA warns against them. Those are still sold too. People just don't want to spend more buying better stuff in a lot of cases, it sells! Hamsters get a very bum deal, poor little things.
