he has got his bed and some foam matting in there for him, every couple of minutes i open the door throw some treats in and give some pats on the head and tell him he is a good boy, he seems to like it more if he can see out of the cage rather than have it covered

Sometimes it's nice just to cover the top (with a towel or something) but leave the sides exposed so that the dog can see out. It's all personal preference of the dog involved though.

he has still got a towel on the top but not on the sides, he has finally decided to eat his chew, that will keep him busy for a while, dad is almost finished with the fence

thanks bextull the bowls are a great idea but i think dad will likk me if we have to buy that dog any more stuff, i had to sort out all his toys, grooming and treats this morning, he has one overflowing box of toys one overflowing bucket of brushes one grooming bag brimming with shampoos, conditioners and sprays and 3 tubs full of treats and free food samples. he already has 7 bowls but knowing dad he might make something like that for his bowls If you had some old wiring, with the thick rubber covering then you could probably bend it into shape and make one. With a bit of Duct Tape it would work well. I think anyway?!?! Not sure if anybody will know what type of wire I'm talking about though, it's not a great description! Maybe I can find a google picture, give me a sec. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/ba/ElectricWireGrounded.jpg/220px-ElectricWireGrounded.jpgThose wires ^^^. The colourdy things coming out of the tube. They are flexible but strong and keep their shape unless you mess with them. I think they'd make good hooks for the bowls. Or if you had an old clothes hanger that you could bend into shape, that's what some of mu old agility jump cups were.

Dads are so annoying, pottering around changing everything! My dad has half finished putting up the fence, but stopped that and started putting a new gate on..?! So now we don't have a proper fence or a proper gate... so dogs can't go out in the garden off lead

well he is only replacing one fence pannel today and says he will do the rest tomorrow, but it does need doing as the fence is very rotten and wont last if barley jumps up at it. on Saturday he is modifying the cage we have for the car as it does not quite fit right.

There's no point in giving Milo chews, they're gone in seconds...

finished today's crate training on a high, opened the door to let him out and said 'of you go' and he didn't want to budge so just left him to himself he eventually left, so at least he likes it as he didn't want to leave it

Oscar had those for his birthday. Lasted a few minutes at most! I had a crocodile one before too. Oscar didn't seem to care about it though so I left it in the kitchen. I came in 5 minutes later to see my brother washing his hands with it!!!! He thought it was a bar of soap!!!! My dad finished our new gates afew months ago. The back is now separated from the front, but it took him like 5 months to do! He was supposed to do something with the perimeter fence too, but he hasn't started yet! All he needs to do is get me some wooden posts and I'll do it! I have 3 months!

He thought it was a bar of soap!!!! Sorry, but that did make me giggle, bextull! I can just imagine your brother washing his hands with a dog chew! We got Pepper and Ellie hedgehogs ones once when we were in the vets because they seemed really interested in the display. When we got them home, Pepper refused to touch hers. Ellie demolished hers and then spent all night trying to steal Pepper's Crate training sounds like it's going well puppypal. I have to admit, we went against all the crate training methods when we got Pepper's crate. We just put her in and left her there! Oops. We did the same thing with Ellie too. Luckily, both dogs love their crates and willingly take themselves off to them if they feel like it. Having said that, I think we did start off by feeding Pepper in her crate and she had her nice, comfy bed in there to help her feel comfortable.

Just wondering why you are wanting to use a cage?
i.e What is the long term aim of crate training for Barley?
Both my dogs are crate trained but now they are adults cage is only used when we have deliveries or I have dog scared people in the house or when we are visiting family.
