How did you go about crate training, we have recently bought a crate for barley and wondering how is the best way to accustom him to it, this is all in preparation for the YKC activity weekend in November and we are going to be staying in a B&B and he has to be crated overnight, any advice will be helpful.

I would start by feeding him in his crate. From now on, EVERY meal should be in the crate, and he will associate it with things he likes. If you don't want to do that, or you can do both, get him in it and give him lots of tasty treats. Some dogs like to have something covering it like a blanket, it's more cosy When we put Woody in a crate overnight, at first he whined and yelped (he was a pup) but we simply ignored this and after a couple of days he was perfect, and has been ever since! Whatever you do, DON'T use it as a punishment when he's done something naughty. For now, he needs to associate crate with good things.

We started off by putting Jess's breakfast and dinner in there. When she felt comfortable stepping in and out we left her in the room it's in by herself for short periods of time but with the crate door still open. We slowly increased the time she was left alone and then started closing the door to the crate making sure she had fresh water and a few toys inside. I hope this works for Barley, also try putting a towel/blanket over the sides and back of the crate - it makes them feel more secure. This worked for Jess and she still has her breakfast/dinner inside the crate and goes into it while we're out

it is quite hard to feed him in his crate at the moment as he has got a pair of raised bowls that he eats/drinks from, but treats seem like a good idea, i might also put some food in his kong and put that in there

The way I crate trained Earl was by placing his crate indoors in a warm spot and filling it with toys, his bed, a drink of fresh water, some treats hidden underneath his bed, scattered in his crate for him to find - basically making it a lovely place for him to be.
When he was happy to enter and exit his crate with ease, I taught him to go into his crate on command. Then, I told him to go in his crate and then told him to stay for a while, with the crate door open - luckily for me he was happy to stay and snuggle down in his crate.
Then, I left him in his crate with the door closed and locked, but when I was at home to comfort him.
Now he can be happily left in his cosy little crate.
Good luck.

Also BT gave me an idea, put his favourite toys etc (things that really smell of him!) in there with him, to make the scent more familiar. OR an item of clothing of yours that smells of you.

he does not really have any favorite toys but his bed and towel will go in there as they smell of him (too much) and item of clothing sounds like a good idea. he has lots of room in it as it is the biggest cage we could find on gumtree for a reasonable price, and it is blue instead of normal black

Wonderful idea PFT - I did that with Earl, but we took home a piece of material that had Earl's mum's smell on it when we took Earl home for the very first time

These things, www.petplanet.co.uk/search_adv.asp?sp=Dog-Cage-Water-BowlThen you'd have spare bowls too when you aren't using the crate. It would also stop the contents of the bowls being poured all over the place if he knocked them over in the crate (Oscar did that the whole time!)

thanks bextull the bowls are a great idea but i think dad will likk me if we have to buy that dog any more stuff, i had to sort out all his toys, grooming and treats this morning, he has one overflowing box of toys one overflowing bucket of brushes one grooming bag brimming with shampoos, conditioners and sprays and 3 tubs full of treats and free food samples. he already has 7 bowls but knowing dad he might make something like that for his bowls

He is in his crate at the moment every couple of minutes i am opening the door and giving him some treats and making a fuss of him, he can see me and i can see him at the moment, i have covered the back, sides and top of the crate with blankets and towels so only the door is visible where he can see me, he is lying down and being very good at the moment, i am going to fill his kong up with his tea in a minute and give that to him

Put some really comfy bedding in there and give him lots of praise, treats and love when he's inside. Be patient with him, and don't let him out if he's misbehaving/whining but wait until he's settled so he knows that he can't get out by being naughty!
