I think I jinxed it when I posted in the Chit Chat thread about Roman's leg issues being historic. Around midday yesterday I heard a crash from the kitchen & found Roman on the floor. From the noise, I think he missed a jump on to kitchen worktop & caught a tray, sticking out from between cupboards under the worktop, on the way down. Left hind not quite right. When laid down on windowsill the lower joint seemed in an awkward position bent up instead of underneath him. Leg was weaker when getting up on sofa & unbalanced when getting down of sofa back - slid down. Contacted the vet & he was booked in for 10:35 this morning which I could cancel if he had recovered overnight. He spent late afternoon/early evening sprawled out with hind legs straight out. Subdued ?pain. Didn't try to get up on worktop as normal when food time but once actually getting food was back to normal vocal self & jumped on/off the table as normal for his BG test & meds. After last food he suddenly decided to jump on to worktop again. Made it but left hind was worse. Didn't put weight on it, Lifted him down & eventually was walking on it. First thing this morning he wasn't interested in moving/jumping up but suddenly took a running jump at worktop, I managed to catch him before falling & gave him the extra push. No weight being put on left hind. Put him on floor & whilst doing the food he got on a low climber. Lifted him on to table for BG test, when done he got off table of his own accord & jumped back up for his tablets then again off/on for his Thyronorm & again for his food & insulin, jumped off for his main food. Not sure what's going to happen at the vets:(

Thanks everyone for their good wishes for Roman & sorry for causing any panic. I was waiting to see how things went over a couple of days. We saw the vet who said that there was considerable muscle wastage on the Roman's hind leg & possible nerve damage in his lower leg/paw, although when he firmly pressed the paw Roman yelped so not too bad. There doesn't seem to be any damage to his cruciate or more issues with his Achilles. Given that Roman can't be given steroids due to the contra indication with diabetes, there are limitations to what he can be given. The vet advised letting nature take its course even if that means that Roman may have to learn to walk slightly differently e.g. with a bit of swinging of his leg & perhaps he might learn that he can't jump up on to the worktop again! I suggested that I gave Roman some Nutramed as well as his Nutraquin+ to help with his arthritis. He said that was for liver function & I reminded him that I'd told him a couple of years ago about a conversation I'd had with the manufacturers (long story) & that Nutramed contained Boswellia one of the main ingredients in the Nutraquin & that the combination didn't exceed the max. daily dose. He agreed that this should be tried. I suggested giving Roman some Metacam as he was in pain but there are concerns about that causing diarrhoea or other GI issues & that impacting on his diabetes management. However as I was really concerned about Roman's pain we agreed to try the Metacam & see what happens. Unfortunately the vet is away during the week for the next 3 weeks but is working weekends. So if any concerns then I'm to book an appointment for Saturday, obviously if there is anything urgent then I can see one of the other vets in the week. I also raised the question of quality of life & the vet basically replied we're not there yet & the Roman is like holly very difficult to kill off. Not sure now that kill off was his exact words but it's the best I can think of now I must admit I'd gone into the appointment rather worried & not sure if Roman would be coming back home especially if he landed up needing to have an operation on his leg bearing in mind all his other issues & also the quality of his life if he needed cage rest to recover from it. So I came away from the vets with great relief. I started him on the Nutramed & full weight dosage of Metacam yesterday. He still wasn't interested in jumping up on the worktop again as he normally would when I did the foods 8:30-9pm. But after the last food of the night (gone midnight), he jumped up no problem although this morning he jumped up first thing but not so cleanly & didn't this evening. He definitely seems to be walking better & have more control of his leg. He did defecate yesterday since first thing & he's currently normally twice a day, so I was a bit concerned that might be a problem but he did this morning & again this evening & I have a feeling that there is another late evening fro the aroma drifting around the house! His blood glucose isn't too bad, considering the stress he must be having. Fingers crossed he's improving OK. I'm going to give him another day or so of full dosage Metacam & then start decreasing it to see what happens. That should give a few days of pain relief along with its anti-inflammatory properties which should help him and hopefully land up not having to give him any if the Nutramed helps & if not find the minimum dose that works. So for the moment its just a waiting game to see what happens but so far so good.

Hopefully things will continue to improve with Roman - great reference to holly. lotsofcats, I've always said my vet has a good (warped) sense of humour - we get on well. Not only a good consultation but no charge or least there was nothing on the account when he'd moved on to another patient & reception checked the account as normal. Of course he might catch up later Today he is still jumping on to the worktop with varying degrees of success. Although I wish I'd been watching with a camera when he did his latest a few minutes ago. I was at the worktop getting his midday(ish) pouch ready to put in his feeder but this is the feed I'm giving him the Metacam with. He was definitely hungry - I found he'd polished off Osiris', not that there was that much in that feeder but as it was stuck open he'd obviously barged Osiris aside (otherwise the feeder wouldn't have opened) and used his head to keep the lid from shutting, which results in the feeder jamming partially open! Anyway I was shaking the Metacam bottle when I heard a slight bang & big splash! Roman had jumped up on to the worktop at the edge of the sink, which still had washing up water in. I turned to see Roman extracting part of him out of the sink with his eyes & aim still concentrating on the Metacam bottle! He'd only had a dip rather than a real soaking so I able to quickly towel his legs & lower chest off Then it was a case of dry the worktop & the floor where there was more than on Roman!! He was sat by the pouch & Metacam (dry worktop), whilst I dried the floor, waiting. As soon as I put syringe to bottle he was very eager to get to it watching me (with a very careful eye) measure the right amount. As soon as I had finished the syringe contents he was trying to grab the syringe & even when he'd finished the dose (direct into his mouth) he wanted more. He always loved his Metacam! He wasn't even trying to pester me for his food just the Metacam, although as soon as I'd got it put away he was definitely letting me know that he should get his food! There is only one Roman!!! Probably just as well!!!
