I can just picture Roman in his carrier on the way to the vets. Great news that the splint, bandage and collar are off, much to Roman's relief. Can Roman come out of the cage?

I can just picture Roman in his carrier on the way to the vets. Great news that the splint, bandage and collar are off, much to Roman's relief. Can Roman come out of the cage? Oh sorry the cage was only for when he had one of the splints on. So currently he's snoozing on a conservatory chair & spent the morning on the cushion on the living room windowsill. Yesterday evening he spent a fair amount of time on a cushion on the sofa & part of the time Lexie was n the one next to him He's limited to either the living room or the dining room & conservatory combination during the day/evening so that Osiris/Lexie can come & go as they please, although Lexie often spends time in the room with him. Overnight he has the run of the house & the other 2 have no access to the outside to enable that. Last night he spent most of it on our bedroom windowsill cushion although it was quite funnas I woke up around 4:30, & couldn't see him (Osiris was on the landing & Lexie in her room) so went looking could I see him anywhere it was only when I doubled checked the bedroom windowill that I caught some movement out the corner of my eye & there he was (I swear grinning!) in his basket on the floor below the window. He rarely uses that now (prefers the windowsill, landing or spare bed) but although his bed is navy the cushion in it is cream, even in a room with hardly any light you'd think I'd have seen him earlier Thanks for Roman's good wishes scallywag

dutchkitties , Thanks for your comment on Roman on heartpawprints' thread, thought I'd reply here rather than on hers. its been a long haul with Roman & he's not going to be out & about soon. We're supposed to be seeing the head vet next Wednesday (2 weeks from the last visit) but need to book the appointment late tomorrow when they will have done the rotas for the next week as with 3 branch surgeries as well as the hospital & its surgery, they can move around a bit. His knee seems to be progressing well but its the looseness of the ankle that is worrying. He still trails it when jumping & there is very little resistanace if we bend it or move it, although he stands & walks on it Ok when he runs he's hopping more. He's still going for short walks outside but the splint he had on the weekend before last doesn't seem to have helped & may possibly have put him back a bit. Here's a video of bits of his walk yesterday

Roman looks lovely in his walking jacket. He is so cautious on his walk. Why don't you let him go under the shrubs? I'm sure there's room for Mark under there?!!
I hope he continues to improve now the splint is off, slowly but surely.

Under the shrubs is also down a steepish bank, there's a small stream (when its wet weather) bed lotsofcats Vet visit tomorrow morning, we'll have to see how he's done. Still think the hock is floppy though.

Still think the hock is floppy though. That got my imagination going - when my cats are out in their walking jacket all of a sudden they shoot forward to see something - I just pictured Roman zooming forward under those bushes and dragging Mark down the bank!!! sorry, best keep away from the bushes with him!
Good luck at the vets.

Thanks scallywag & lotsofcatsWell it was an interestig vets visit. No improvement on his floppy hock but we have a probable diagnosis. After really testing out his hock by bending it right up (almost double) which I assume was testing both resistance & flexibility, manipulating the joint. As well as the failed see how he walks, Roman basically refused to move on the floor & although he eyed the table top he didn't even try to jump! Every other visit he's walked & tried to jump!!! Typical cat The head vet thinks he's got a loose/stretched achilles tendon, which was mentioned as a possibility when I was shown the x-rays. Options:- - Shorten the loose part of the tendon but there are risks, such as not being quite right adjustment, any such repair could lead to more weakness.
- Put a screw in the hock & fix it - down side no spring in that hock
The decision we've taken for the moment is based on the vet's comment that I'm probably worrying about something that may or may not happen:- Roman jumping up & that hock causing his paw not to get in the right position & landing him up in trouble. We've seen this when he jumps to the top of tall climber using the 2nd highest platform as a bounce point & not getting that paw on & it being left hanging over the edge. He was left holding on to the top one with his front paws until he managed to the other hind on 2nd ledge & then the damaged one. It's worry to watch but he does sort himself out. He's definitley developing his shoulder muscles!! We & the vet think the best option is to do nothing & see how he goes. The vet also suggested we should start getting Roman back to normal, i.e. being allowed out. I'm not so sure yet, at least not this week/weekend as Mark's away & I don't fancy being worried about Roman whilst I'm on my own! A typical over-anxious cat servant We're back at the vets in 4 weeks. The vet also thinks there may have been a weakness in tha Achilles tendon beforehand & that may have been the reason he injured his cruciate in the first place, he stressed how unusual it is for cats to get a cruciate rupture. Oh & good news, Roman is now down to 5.45 Kg - still a bit to go (probably to 5) but thats a good, continuing drop from 6.1Kg)

I can understand you being over-anxious, I would be too. Try letting Roman out a bit next week and see how he goes. Good that his weight is coming down.

The words "a bit" aren't in Roman's vocabulary lotsofcats.

Just like Toffee! It must be a ginger cat thing. At least you can track Roman when he does go out - that will be something.

lotsofcats, I can't track him at the moment only find him if he's within 400 feet, or there abouts, of us via his Loc8tor, so we need to know where he goes. The GPS tracker we have (G-Paws) only recorded where he'd been on to the device itself for subsequent download so at least we have/had an idea of where to start looking for him. I'm seriously thinking of getting a GPS real-time tracker for him though, the trouble is it relies on a good signal to the GPS satelites as well as mobile signal, which as he spends time in woods isn't always feasible. It looks like I'm going to be tramping through those woods with my mobile & a GPS app to see how good it could be. If any one sees me its definitely going to add to my weird lady image!!! (no comments please )

I'll vouch for that PS. Talk went well, and the cat pictures (particularly Roman's) got their usual adoring comments
