Animals I love: Cats
Pets I own: Have always had cats as far as I can remember. Currently the owners of a Tabby kitten called "Ringo". He was born Weds 29/04/2015 & we got him Thursday 18/06/2015. He's just over 3 months old at time of writing. He is light grey with black Tiger stripes & he has black rings around his tail & back legs, hence the name "Ringo". Nothing to do at all about The Beatles. Now he has started to develop a beigey colour in his coat, & in some photos & different light, for some reason seems to have a slight orangey/ginger colour.
He's a right character, always friendly & loving & happy to see us, always following us around the house, always charging around & playing with his toys & stalking anything that moves, & then when he gets tired, jumps up for a fuss. Couldn't ask for a better cat. He's perrrfect.

Hope everything goes as planned. I wouldn't worry too much about him not coming home when allowed out again. Cats know when they are loved & they'll always come home for some fuss & affection.

Cats know when they are loved & they'll always come home for some fuss & affection. sorry for the hi jack tonib but just gotta grab J1M and ask how the lovely Ringo is doing xx Hi everyone. We've been busy the last few months with some family business that started at the same time as Ringo's accident. Some may remember it mentioned at the time. The family business unfortunately has now come to an end but Cheryl's mum is now at peace & we say our final goodbyes today. We now have more time for more social activities that we had put a hold on. We are only thankfull that we saw it coming for months rather than it being a sudden illness which would have been even more heartbreaking. We had time to get used to what was inevitable. As for Ringo, he's absolutely fine thank you. He was a year old on April 29th & started letting him outside. We bought a SureFlap small pet door that works on his microchip & he's in & out like a yoyo all day. We have it lock him in between midnight & 4 am but he's usually in for the night before then & comes up to bed when we do. Sometimes he's already out when I get up for work & comes in for his breakfast. He never goes far, mainly playing with "Ollie", the ginger kitten from next door who was born a few days after Ringo. They seem like proper little play mates & it's always amusing to watch them. Only thing is that the last 4 days he has caught 4 birds & brought them home, yuk, thankfully, the last one, which was yesterday (none today) was still alive & Cheryl was able to rescue it & let it go again. He's a sod, lol. You would never know he very badly broke his rear left leg the way he runs around, climbs trees & jumps. He jumps on top of my 6 foot high roof of my shed no problems at all & scales the tall pine trees at the bottom of the garden in seconds. Our training of him to come when we call his name has worked really well too & always comes without fail whether he is indoors or out. We just always give him some Dreamies treats as a reward. On our last visit to the vet after Ringo had his pins removed, we were surprised that he thanked us. He thanked us for saving Ringo's leg. Now it's just waiting we think another month & he should be having his yearly booster jab.

Hope everything goes as planned. I wouldn't worry too much about him not coming home when allowed out again. Cats know when they are loved & they'll always come home for some fuss & affection. Thanks for the good wishes for Roman J1M. I'm not seriously worried, when he's eventually let out (& can't see it for a while yet) he'll be home sometime but just a case of when. When he was first adopted from the rescue the 1st owners had to wait a week before he came back so they returned him - their loss osur gain. When we first let him out (with a little trepidation) he came back about an hour later but he has gone missing for a day once. scallywag, we've heard from the vet & the x-rays show nothing untoward (so good news no broken bones), he thinks the splint has done some good as there doesn't seem to be as much movement compared to Friday. The suggested treatment is to keep the splint for another 2/3 weeks. My concern is that it could just be the cage rest easing it a bit & once exercise is started again it could weaken again. Also it doesn't explain the fact this scratching (or rather failing to) has been happening since the op. (or injury). I asked about referral for a CT/MRI scan as this would show up the tendons which x-rays don't. He's going to have a word the head vet (who wasn't in this morning) to see if he has any views on Roman's case & subject to no better suggestion he'll be referred to a specialist vets. Lets hope they can fit him in.

J1M, sory to hear about Cheryl's mum & thank you for spending the time, especially today, to post a message to Roman & myself. It's good news about Ringo, so glad he's enjoying himself in the great outdoors & is a good boy about coming home when called Ours wander further afield so don't always hear us but the Loc8tor tags on their collars mean we stand a chance of finding them. Those Sureflap Pet doors are really good aren't they. We have one although we've never used the timer option, not sure I'd trust our Osiris not to anhililate it trying to get out, managed to force a different variety by hooking his claws under the flap & pulling it towards him & break the lock! However it does seem that this one will make it less likely for him to be able to to it.

I hope that you get your referral for a CT/MRI scan tonib. More cage rest for Roman, he won't be happy. Sorry to hear about Cheryl's Mum J1M, it's still hard even if you did see it coming. Glad that Ringo is doing so well - love his pics.

Well, the head vet wasn't in today at all so Roman's case will be reviewed tomorrow & the vet hopefully will contact me tomorrow. However I had a look at the referral vets & was at bit concerned about the normal length of time before appointment, so decided to ring them & see, & apparently its even worse if we need to see an orthopeadic surgeon the earliest appointment is mid July unless its an emergency!!!!! So when I went to pick Roman up I managed to have a word with the vet & passed on what they had said & that I really didn't want to wait that long, whilst I appreciate that the response he gets may be different, we need to get Roman diagnosed, even if it turns out that nothing is wrong, as soon as possible so as to know how to progess his injury. So if necessary could we conside other referral vets. The vet also showed me the x-rays & we did discuss the tendons (I told him that it the same lower hind that had an inflammed tendon sheath which had to be cleaned out in 2012, which was before he was at the practice, & wondered if there was any possible weakness from that). From the x-ray there is the possibility that the Achilles tendon is a little loose but not much & a CT scan would help with looking at that. Basically unless we find out what is wrong or the splint etc. does the trick the only option that our vets could do is to plate the joint in a set position - once that's done there's no going back. They did 3 x-rays, the quote was for one so the bill was a bit higher!!!! One was the whole of the pelvis down to the toes, he was obviously on his back with his tail between is legs. A side view of bones from below the knee to the toes & a close-up of the hock to toes. He's come home with his leg splinted & bandaged into shape from the top of the leg to the toes, the previous one was only from below the knee to the toe. He's finding this one very awkward, especially trying to go to the litter tray - he can't seem to squat. don't know if that's due to the anaesthetic still in him or just the shape. I'll give it until tomorrow & if he can't deal with the litter tray (& we've given him a bigger one to see if that will help as he kept getting the leg out of the tray & struggling to get it back in the smaller tray) I'll get in contact with the vets again. Oh most definitely scallywag, however there are a number of CT/MRI scanners around here including Liverpool University School Veteninary Medicine Just this is the one our vets normally use - we'll just have to see.

Poor Roman, that new bandage does look very uncomfortable. I hope that you can find another place to take him for a scan.
I'm having terrible trouble replying to this thread - everything keeps freezing!

The head vet wants to see us so we've an appointment with him at 4:05 this afternoon. Lets hope we can get this progressed swiftly lotsofcats are you using Google Chrome as the browser as I'm having similar problems (not just with this thread but many sites)? It appears to be a problem the last 2 versions of Chrome as its being reported quite widely. I'm also getting more frequent Shockwave Flash failures. I hate Chrome updates

The head vet removed Roman's splint & a little fur attached to the sticky bandage! Manipulated his foot & hock, saw the video, watched Roman walk. He reckons that it's a case of more time needed & also phsyiotherapy so exercise is the order of the day. He's happy with the exercise we're giving him. He said he wouldn't have used the splint - I think Roman agreed!!!!
He was not happy in the carrier on the way to the vets, very vocal about it (most unlike him), he turned round in his carrier a few times - an interesting exercise involving being upside down at times & thumping splint & leg against the carrier & getting the buster collar in some interesting shapes!
On the way home he was much more relaxed & spent the time washing, no splint or collar!!!!
We're to see the vet again in 2 weeks.
