Oh lotsofcats, I'm really sorry to hear this news. Kiba-Khan was a lovely cat, full of character who made his presence felt by both human, feline (& rat)!! He lived to a good age of nearly 15 years 9 months. You & your family will sorely miss him as will we here on the forum. He'll now be well & young again at Rainbow Bridge, playing/bossing his friends who have gone before along with others from the forum. RIP Kiba-Khan

Thank you for all your kind messages. Thank you for the lovely poem scallywag. I'll tell you all what happened tomorrow when I can type it on my computer in work, it's long-winded. The other cats were very quiet until today. Bramble has taken over as top cat, she sat on Kiba-Khan's wicker seat and stayed there all day - she has never sat on it before.

When I got Kiba-Khan in from the pen Thursday evening he didn't eat much and was a bit quiet. He didn't eat on Friday morning, so I didn't put him out in the pen. when I came home from work at 3pm on Friday I offered him food, but he wouldn't eat anything. I got a Lick-e-lix and he ate all of that and then another one. He got down off the armchair and had a drink of water and then back on it and to sleep. When my daughter came home from work after 5 she smoothed him and asked when did he get a bit of a lump on his head, which I hadn't noticed earlier. Later on, I noticed his eyes were weepy and he was drooling. I tried to wipe his eyes but he cried out. Hubby had gone out to pick my daughter up from her friends, so I was waiting to ask him to take KK to the emergency vet. He said he'd be okay until the next day!!. I was then on the phone crying to my son and asked him to take KK. In the meantime, the lump on his head had got much bigger and was above his eyes and right across from side to side. I phoned the vets and we had to go 12 miles away. I knew then that KK would be put to sleep. I was ages in the vets, they were busy. When the vet spoke to me, she said she first saw him she hoped it was an abscess, but when I said he hasn't any back teeth at all she ruled that out. She said he'd cried when she tried to look in his mouth and his eyes. She believes it was a cancerous growth and something had made it flare up and cause the swelling across his head and there was nothing that could be done for him at all. She said he would have had developing for a while.
The vet was lovely and let me hold KK while she administered the injection. I put him back in his carrier and she tucked the towel all around him, talking to him all the time. All the nurses had been admiring him and the vet said he was avery good age for a Maine Coon and she'd never one get to that age.
I think hubby must have felt guilty because he paid for the weekly shopping on Saturday! When I got back from the vets he was surprised that KK had been pts. I couldn't have left KK in pain until the next day - he may have died in the night, but I still couldn't leave him like that. My daughter said hubby gets upset and can't cope with it - he buries his head in the sand.
KK is buried in the flower bed in front of the greenhouse, where he can see the other cats in the pen. He was buried with his long-legged rabbit toy, which looked like a giant flea, which he'd had since he was a kitten, although he hadn't bothered with it for a while. When we went to bed we used to hide it from him and every morning he would have found it and he would be cuddled up to it.
Until we buy a plant and a stone ornament hubby put a square stone block on top of the soil. Toffee was sat on it for ages Saturday and yesterday.
I miss KK so much. It was just so sudden. He'd been so happy since he had most of his teeth out in September. He's free from pain now and despite his many ailments, lived a long life and I he knows he had a good life. Hopefully he's met his forum friends, Beau and Roman in Rainbow Bridge.

That is so sad, but you did the kindest thing for your beautiful boy. Lumps that grow and enlarge quick ( like Beaus did ) are such a worry , and like you my O.H could not cope , even to the point when on the 30th Nov 2022 vet visit at 5.45pm O.H still wanted to bring Beau home with us. He just could not cope either Jenny , must be a man thing.
Sending you BIG HUGS lots of Love xx

Oh lotsofcats , what a nightmare you had but in the end you were able to get to the vets & thanks to your perseverance Kiba-khan is now free from any pain and distress & would have known how much you loved him. The staff at the emergency vets sound lovely I know how much all of your cats mean to you but he was special, the Maine Coon you'd always wanted. King of your feline family & a real character. I think Toffee was paying his respects to Kiba-Khan, I still remember you telling us about Toffee bringing KK the present of a (dead) rat! KK playing with it in the pen & Toffee looking pleased with himself outside.

The staff were lovely at the vets tonib. When I was in the waiting room, I noticed a table with a candle in glass jar. One of the receptionists then blew the candle out. I put my glasses on to read what it said underneath - Please talk quietly as when the candle is lit someone is saying goodbye to their pet. I don't know if other vets do this, but what a lovely, thoughtful gesture. I know I've still got 5 cats in the house, but it seems so empty without KK. He was such a big presence and a demanding cat. He wouldn't let me ignore him.

lotsofcats, What a lovely idea those vets have with the candle which they must have subsequently lit for you & KK My vets gave me candle in a jar when I picked up Roman's ashes, apparently the head vet makes them himself
