Hi guys, So recently Keke has been making a weird honking noise after she drinks on the odd occasion and this morning she made the noise when she saw me walking down the hallway (she was in her cage). We are waiting for a call from a new vet today as we are leaving our current one for reasons and we were thinking about asking them about it. She doesn't make the noise all the time but it's usually after she drinks and I've just been thinking she drinks to fast! My mum seems to think its kennel cough and I keep assuring her it can't be as she hasn't been in a kennel or in the vets long enough to have that kind of problem or to pick this up (I will not risk putting her on the floor in the vet anyway just yet). I have done some research into the 'honking' and most web pages have said other reasons can be reverse sneezing, excitement, after eating or drinking, pulling on the lead and so on, but I thought I would ask you guys if your dogs have ever made a honking cough noise? I'm not to worried as she is running around playing, no difficulty breathing and so on Thanks for any help!

Kennel cough can crop up anywhere, not just vets/groomers/kennels. Just it spreads quickly in those areas as dogs are in close contact.
Jaspers had it a few times and he just picked it up out and about.
Kennel cough is more like a hacking cough. I'm sure you'll be able to find examples on YouTube. It sounds quite violent and can look quite alarming to the owner. There's also reverse sneezing although I have little knowledge of reverse sneezes.

Also if you're taking her to the vets today and you think that it is even a consideration that its kennel cough, tell your vet before you go in. Vets don't (or shouldn't) allow dogs with kennel cough into the practise and whenever Jaspers ha KC we've had to wait in the car until our turn as it is spread by the droets expelled by sneezing/coughing so even if keke isn't on the floor it could still affect other dogs. I'm not sure what else honking could be but I hope it's not too serious

charlottte Ah I never realised that kennel cough can be picked up like that, she hasn't been out for a walk yet as she isn't aloud out until the Tuesday coming. It sounds more like a honking its not all the time just after she drinks or when she gets excited? I'm going to ask the vet just for piece in mind anyway but thank you

Definitely sounds like reverse sneezing to me. My Kobi does it a lot, sometimes after drinking but mostly when he is lying across our laps and has head head buried under our arms or legs, which makes me wonder if it then happens because he can't breathe so easily. He also drinks very fast. It is nothing to worry about but does sound a bit alarming.

Hi kekedobie The first things that came to mind as soon as I read the title was Reverse sneezing or Kennel cough. Cooper some times does the reverse sneeze thing, the easiest way to see if it's that is does her neck go quite tight and rigid while she makes the noise? You can usually stop an episode of it by massaging the neck. If it continues you can hold your hand over her nose which makes her breath through her mouth, this will usually sort it out. The only thing that made me think of Kennel cough was you brought the other dobie in to your home?? Maybe she is carrying it?

Yessss kennel cough can be picked up in other places as well as kennels and vets etc.
Earl sometimes makes funny noises after eating/drinking/intense exercising due to excitement/speed in doing whatever he's been doing.
