Any recommendations for a protective/anti-itch/moisturising skin cream for dogs? Alfie gets his blood pressure checked every four weeks because of his KD and his medications, and the little cuff goes on the front legs - there is a little sensor bit which needs to touch skin, so they shave around an inch of fur from the back of his paw. Kinda like from the where the paw stops/leg begins up to where the stopper pad is. They do both legs as they take readings from each. As the fur gets shaved totally off, it gets really itchy/irritating for him as it starts to grow back, and then it's time for it to be shaved off again! He is using his back legs to scratch at the area and can make it quite red/sore. I have been wondering about a skin cream to help. At the moment I am bathing with Leucillin and applying either aloe vera or Sudocreme depending on how bad it is, but I think something dog-specific would be better. I have wondered about the Dorwest skin balm, but open to other suggestions? (nothing stinky ideally )

Have you given essential oils a thought? I was thinking something like camomile, sandalwood and tea tree or lavender in almond oil or even plain old olive oil?

Thanks both! I hadn't thought about essential oils cazypops. I think they might sting a little at the moment, because he's so raw? orpheous87 I'll definitely keep going with the aloe vera. I am virtually covering him in it at the moment, I don't think it's helping all that much but it does something, and I like that I don't have to worry if he licks it off.

I don't think you can use essential oils directly on skin without diluting them first barley. And not on broken skin. You could put some in aloe vera though, that would work as a carrier.

Ah ok! His skin is broken in places so definitely not a good idea. Thank you!

Sorry barley that I didn't make myself clear. orpheous87 is correct, you need to dilute essential oils in a carrier ie. Almond oil or olive oil or even the aloe vera cream but I'd recommend a plain vitamin E cream. You CAN use Lavender oil directly on the skin, but it's alway better to use in a carrier. For every 10mls of carrier you can use upto 5 DROPS of essential oils. If you're not confident in making a blend then try tea tree shampoo as tea tree is a natural antiseptic properties.

Ahh ok, I see! Thanks for clarifying I have ordered those skin creams from Viovet that I linked too, so hopefully they'll help. He has been driven mad by his paws today, I've given him a Malaseb foot wash and that seems to have calmed them down for now.

Just remembered something from a previous thread, have you tried bathing Alfies paws in a bath of epsom salts. I believe it promotes healing and helps with itching. This is a link to the thread yourpet.boards.net/post/112206/thread

HIJACK: so need something for Phoebe at the moment her allergies are causing issues. Any suggestions? My hibiscrub is now out of date. I am going to bath her end of next week for holiday in skinny dip shampoo.

caz2golden do her allergies affect her all over or are they more localised? I really like the Leucillin spray for small, sparsely coated areas. I’m using that on Alfie’s paws too. For all over, I think Maleseb takes some beating. Probably hideous ingredients and it’s a pain that’s it’s prescription only, but it’s about the only thing that really calms Alfie down when he’s super bad. When he’s not quite so bad, Vetoquinol aloe & oatmeal shampoo is nice for a gentle/sensitive skin soothing shampoo.

Thanks barley, I was actually looking at where I might be able to get some Leucillin spray locally today. Might drive to Haverfordwest after work and see if pets at home has it! It is online so hoping it is in store! She has some sore areas on her back legs, in region of her hocks. Worst area is section on her tail which is seriously sore, possibly now a hot spot i.e it is localized areas she is damaging.

Poor girl My local PAH definitely has Leucillin in store, I’ve got it from there before, hoping yours does too! Isaderm (previously Fuciderm) is the only thing that works for Alfie when he gets as far as hotspot, I can normally catch them before but not always.

Was able to get some Leucillin today in pets at home, unsure Phoebe was impressed with me spraying her back legs.
Sadly her tail has gone horrid, yesterday it was sore, red and scabby today it is weeping (full on hotspot) so had to try and trim some fur back (not easy on a dog which is wriggling like a slippery fish!) which is a shame as now she will have a gap in her feathering for next 6-12 months, hoping letting some air in will help it to dry and heal.
