Hi guys,
I'm really desperate for quick answers on this... So roundabout a week ago my boyfriend and I, decided to adopt a ferret from the RSPCA. We fulfilled all of their requirements as best as we could, and then my boyfriend went over to reserve the animal, but when he did so they told him that this specific ferret would be better off with a female companion, but it wouldn't be absolutely necessary it would just be better. (The ferret was advertised as a single, who can live with a female if introduced properly and did not state that it's absolutely necessary), anyhow he told them he would talk to me about it and make a decision. We decided we won't be able to take care of two right off the bat, because neither of us has had a ferret before and we want to start with one and if we can easily cope with the animal get a second one later on.
He got a call today and explained that we can't afford two right from the start and their answer to this was: "Um I have to speak to my re-homing manager and give you a call. We might not let you adopt if you only want one."
Can someone explain what all of this is about? P.S. This is also the first time any of us wants to adopt a pet and therefore we really don't know how to react to it...
Thank you

Hi krispie, welcome to the forum. I'm sorry I personally can't help as I've no experience with ferrets or anything that could be classed as similar. Someone else might know more. However I looked at a website to this forum related to this forum & found this article n ferret care which might help. www.yourpet.tv/ferret-care/I wonder if its a case of interpretation during the initial description & chat. The RSPCA could mean that they have a single male ferret (for whatever reason) who could live better with a female rather than a male ferret but hadn't thought to say that ferrets prefer social groups. Hopefully you can sort it out.

Hi tonib, Thank you so much for your reply, I actually got another call from them about an hour or two ago and they refused us to give the ferret as a single male...although when we first went to see him she said it would be great to have one at first since we are new to that sort of animal. But now they have changed their mind for whatever reason.... We think that there was another family thinking of adopting him similar time to us and they have said yes to bonding him, but backed out eventually and the process was already in progress when we came along. The reason we think this is the case is because they were messing us about for a while and now all of a sudden they are really pushy about us adopting the two of them... We agreed to adopt both anyway, but it kind of seems what the RSPCA did was a little bit a unfair...saying yes you can adopt a single, get a cage for a single ferret etc... We are stuck with an extra cage now. Thank you anyway the page that you linked seems helpful

Glad to help krispie & I hope you enjoy the new additions to your family Do come back & let us know how it all goes - I've no knowledge of ferrets so would be interested find out more I should also say that besides talking about our pets we also have a general section as well as photography. The photography section is only visible to registered members although that doesn't mean that you have to post your photos there its just that some members prefer to have a little control over access So, if you'd like, come & join in, it can be quiet at times but the more the merrier
