This isn't really a problem, but it's something I'm curious about.
Every now and again, Ellie will cry for no apparent reason. Like, she'll be laid asleep on the settee or somewhere one minute, then she'll wake up and cry.
She often cries after she's finished eating her tea, but when she does it then, it's because she wants a drink. Bear in mind that both dogs have a water bowl in their crates and there's a bowl in the kitchen too and that she's free to wander into the hall or the kitchen whenever she wants. Why doesn't she just go and get a drink?
She prefers to cry and whine so that we open the door for her and she'll go and drink from the bowl that's outside and full of rainwater. Now, we don't always open the door for her for various reasons. Plus, if we do open the door, she doesn't always go out. It's very frustrating!
This is one of those times where being able to understand the canine language would be really handy!!
Does anyone else's dog do this? I'm completely confused by it.

Jasper will sometimes want to go outside and drink from an old window box thats full of rainwater, I think it's coz it tastes better than tap water as it doesn't have any chlorine in it.

barley is pretty much the same he has two water bowls inside and 4 outside, he will finish eating or come in from a walk and want to go straight outside to have a drink even though his inside water bowls are right next to his bowl and the back door, he much prefers rain water, but then prefers normal tap water over drinking water, he will if he really has drink inside othat is only if he really has to like it is the middle of the night or his outside bowls are empty

If the water is treated then it will smell and taste different. Some dogs do not like this and prefer untreated stuff, even if its the strangest green .....
I dont like treted water. When I am in town at my grandparents I drink bottled stuff or water from home. Oscar is the same.
Our water is not treated, it comes straight from the ground.
My nans tea always tastes horrible because of he water, which is sad as I love tea! (As does Oscar)

I forgot to add, sometimes the issue is that she wants to go to the toilet (as she's just proven tonight), but even if she wants to go to the toilet, she won't go outside without being bribed. We open the back door for her and she just lies on the floor in the living room and refuses to even walk into the hall. I just can't work out why she does this!

I know what you mean about treated water. If we go south of here, the water always tastes different and I don't like it either. So I'm not sure if that's the issue or not

Earl has 2 water bowls. One in the kitchen, and one in his crate. The water bowl in the kitchen doesn't always stay there however. If Earl is outside sunbathing i move the kitchen one outside, and then when he comes back in, I move it back inside. Earl sometimes doesn't go outside to toilet, even if he's desperate, when its raining/windy/other forms of bad/cold/uncomfortable weather. If I was a dog I would hesitate going and cocking my leg in a storm... Maybe she dislikes a type of water. Just keep assessing when she does it, see if there's a pattern, and try to take it from there.

Is it an attention thing? She knows the crying makes you come so she does it to get more attention?? What does she do when you go to her? Or if you don't?
