chantel, based on my prescription history with the cats :-
The vet gave me a written prescription which stated the:-
Name of the animal
Species
Name of the drug
The amount to be supplied
Dosage
Repeat instructions
Different examples below, but all for 6 months worth
Name of Drug:-Metacam 15ml bottle
Amount to be supplied:- one bottle
Dosage:- dose to weight once a day
Instructions:- Orally
Repeat instructions:- repeat 4 more times for 6 months worth
Name of drug:- Thyronorm
Amount to be supplied@- 1 bottle
Dosage:- As directed
Repeat Instructions:- to be repeated 5 times
Name of drug:- Benefortin 5mg tablets
Amount to be supplied:- 28
Dosage:- 1 tablet once a day
Repeat instructions :- to be repeated 5 times.
There was only 1 written prescription charge for the 6 months (the maximum that can be prescribed in one go without seeing a vet) per drug.
So depending on the cost of the drug I usually worked out the vet vs online by taking the
6 months cost of the drug + vet's written prescription charge + any delivery charge for online
Vets vary on how they charge for drugs
I've had
drug charge + dispensing charge
or
just drug charge (presumably built in dispensing charge)
in both cases it was for 1 item's supply so would get the same cost for each repeat in the 6 month period, (number of repeats per 5 months can vary depending how the quantity works out per month. In the examples above the Metacam bottle would last longer than 1 month hence why the repeat was only for 4 more.
meandmine is quite right about the delivery charge often being free above a certain amount - depends on the online company. However that delivery charge is per order so it is possible to combine with other products if necessary or get more than 1 of the drug. However you don't have to order the whole period's prescription quantity from the online company in one go as meandmine implied, so long as the vet writes the prescription correctly i.e single quantity & so many repeats.
I got 2 month's worth of Roman' Benefortin tablets & Insulin in one order
Cost then (2022) was
2 * 28 Benefortin tablets £30.46
2 * Prozinc insulin £104.98
1 delivery charge (due to having to be couriered as insulin has to be be kept chilled) £5.99.
If I'd have got the Benefortin on its own it was below the minimum order for free delivery or I could have upped the quantity to make it so but I chose to order 2 months of each in one order to reduce the delivery charges per 6 months for the insulin and not too far ahead for storage in my fridge & possible expiry dates and the total order value meant there was no delivery charge for the Benefortin.
My calculation for yours based on the figures you gave (I note there ae different strengths of tablet available so do check which your vet would be prescribing to accurately compare costs)
would be £45.95 + 1/6th prescription charge £4.03 =£49.98
both animed & pet drugs are free delivery over £39 so no delivery charge even for just one month.
Just be careful with tablet orders/prescriptions some companies only charge per tablet whilst some do boxed quantities. I note that is the case with Galliprant so check which is the cheapest when doing your calculations although I don't think there's much in it.
Most of the companies have been very helpful when I've had any queries about written prescriptions so that I could make sure the vet's prescription was right before asking for it from the vet. But these days I would suspect that most vets are more used to giving the written prescriptions.
Of course you have to remember to order from an online supplier in plenty of time for the delivery to arrive whereas you probably would get them from the vet immediately but that's another reason to perhaps order 2 months at a time. No difference in total cost but just more in one go.
I hope that all doesn't confuse you but if you've got any questions I'd be happy to clarify further or speak to your vet or the companies.
