Hello all
I was just wondering what everyone uses for worming and flea treatment and how frequently you treat your dogs.
Currently, we are members of our local vets pet health club, which means we get quarterly doses of wormers and flea treatment and also our annual booster as part of the monthly fee. With 3 dogs I am beginning to wonder whether I am getting value for money and if there are cheaper options out there. My original concern was that all treatments require a prescription and that the fee my vets charge for this doesn't make internet buying viable. However, recently someone recommended Drontal Plus to me and said it doesn't require a prescription. Can anyone recommend Drontal Plus and also tell me why it does not need a prescription when other medications do?
Many thanks Paul

I use Drontal Plus for my dog and my cats for their worming. To be honest I probably don't treat them often enough, only twice a year. My vets always give Drontal Plus. I use Advocate for the flea treatment for the dog and cats and I don't use it regularly, I treat them all as soon as I see flea symptoms and then the following month and if the fleas have gone, that is it until they reappear. Advocate does ususually require a prescription but I know where to get it without one. Sounds like a good idea, your local vets health club.

The vets health club is a good idea. But it is £15.50 a month (per dog), so for three dogs I'm not convinced it is the best value for money. Thanks

I see what you mean - it would cost me a fortune for my 8!

I bet, with having 8 . I'm not trying to cut corners on my dogs health, but I am wondering whether I am simply wasting money . Thanks.

Seems like a lot of money to me! I don't need to go to the vets for any of our products.
I use regular Frontline every two months. I know it doesn't have the best reputation but (touch wood) we've never had fleas and never had an issue with the product itself - if it ain't broke don't fix it and all that. I think it costs about £25-30 for a pack of 6
I also use Verm-X liquid every month - it costs around £15 a bottle and the bottle lasts ages for my one small dog.
Been meaning to do a Wormcount again soon too - that's rather more expensive and ruins my savings on the bottle of Verm-x!

Someone recommended a worm count to me. They said they used Drontal Plus, didn't really regularly treat for fleas unless required and did a worm count every year.
I realise my vet is recommending what they think is the best and will questioning me for going with what they think is a lesser product. But when I had my last dog I used Drontal and Frontline and I never really has an issues. I sometimes think I go over the top with my spending on these products, although I don't want to cut corners, I don't want to simply throw money away either. Up until recently I wormed every 28 days to cover lungworm as well, so that ended up being mega expensive.
Thanks

Our vet, of whom I have a very high opinion, reckons worming twice a year is quite sufficient: at his suggestion we worm Bryn when we change the clocks. Never had any problem with worms having used this schedule for about fifteen years.

Agree with Alfiemummy, does sound quite a bit. Though you would need to cost it out to work out if it is actually expensive!
The annual jabs with check up cost quite a bit! Mine are due for theirs in next few weeks!
I do not use anything for fleas unless I suspect an issue and then I would go to vet for an effective treatment. Therefore can not comment on costs etc.
Mum uses Drontal plus (xl) with her dog. I ordered her one with my last order for Gypsys medications for £5.04. It is suggested to do this every 3 months.
I like Alfiemummy use Verm-x once a month with my dogs for 'digestive hygiene'!. I usually get the 500ml bottle and last one cost me just under £30. It will last ~8 months for my two dogs. If I thought mine had worms then I would reach for a chemical wormer.
I did do a wormcount a few months back (mum got me it as a christmas present) that cost ~£55 for the two dogs but I did do the lungworm element as well as the standard worm test! Wormcount is recommend to be done every 3 months. I could not afford to do it that often but will probably do another one in autumn.

I use Advantix for fleas monthly from May to September, but outside of that period I don't treat unless I suspect an issue (happened only once or twice). When I worm, I use Drontal but if I'm being entirely honest, I cannot even remember the last time I wormed Alfie.
