Last year, in TX Maxx of all places, I got Alfie a bottle of ear cleaner which was called 'Animal Health Otic Ear Cleanser', I think it's an American brand. We've tried lots of types of ear cleaner, including the ones from the vet, and they all seem far too strong for Alfie. He really objects to me using them and then wipes his head frantically along the floor as if it stings him. This one from TX Maxx is the only one that hasn't produced the same reaction, it seems really mild and doesn't smell absolutely vile like others, and he doesn't mind me using it at all. We're now nearly out and of course, TX Maxx doesn't have it anymore! All I can find online is American based places that sell it. Does anybody have any suggestions for an alternative? The ones we've tried (and didn't like) are Cleanaural, Epiotic and Johnsons. It looks like this, if anyone happens to stumble across it in their local TX Maxx.... We had the purple one.

Maybe someone at Crufts will have it? I think I've only ever used Cleanaural and one we got from the vets years ago but I can't think of the name, it began with an S...

Hope so! Although we're not going to have enough to last until then! Hmm, it seems I got carried away with the X's... I know TK Maxx is called TK Maxx and not TX Maxx, so not sure why I referred it to as that throughout my first post

Ah, just looked it up and it was Sancerum, we had it so long ago though that I can't really remember what it was like. I think it did have a strong smell so probably won't be any good.
I'll keep an eye out for your one!

Gypsy hates the one the vet gave me, think that was the Epiotic. She shaked her head for ages after its use. I also hate the stuff, seems to always go everywhere and makes her ears all oily.
I would be interested in what others recommend.
At the moment Gypsy still has a dirty ear which seems to not be clearing up yet we have been back and forth to vets numerous times (there is no infection etc). I am currently alternating between what the vet gave me and lintbells colloidal silver, which Gypsy does not notice at all when I use it and it does not mess up her fur.

Just curious barley, do you clean his ears as a precaution or a necessity? I've cleaned Alfie's ears a few times before (for no real reason) but not for ages now. Spaniels are quite well known for getting ear trouble but we've never had an issue, I wonder if it will be any different now I'm letting his fur grow and he won't have so much airflow to them.

Sadly a necessity - his allergies manifest as gunky ears from time to time, amongst other things. They're never itchy and rarely irritate him, they just get like a dry, flaky type discharge. Vet said there is no infection so to just clean as & when with a regular cleanser. We have those horrible oily yellow drops for whenever they get smelly/any signs of infection.

That's a shame but at least they're not infected!

Here's the website barley but it says that you won't be able to buy it direct from them as it's only sold to vets! It is a US product too by the looks of it. lovetpet.com/index.html

Not strictly true since it was in TK Maxx! Although maybe they got a ticking off and that's why they don't have it anymore?!

Haha! I think TK Maxx do manage to get things they shouldn't somehow. I've seen all sorts of different things in there but nothing seems to be a permanent fixture on the shelf. I did find another website that sells it but they don't ship outside of the US.

I've just found that Cleanaural do a 'sensitive' alcohol free version so wondering if this might be better for him! I'll continue to pop into TK Maxx whenever I'm in town (which is probably like three times a year lol) on the hope they'll have it again as it really is a great product and it's lasted us ages. It smells amazing too, we have the lotus plum scent and it's gorgeous

It'll be worth trying at least I would imagine! I have to admit, like alfiemummy, I haven't really had any problems with Pepper's ears despite them being constantly wet lol. I do have some Thornit powder though, just in case.
