Hi all,
Mum been to vet for medication check for her 13 1/2 yr old regarding her joints. On discussion with the vet he recommends adding an Omega 3 supplement. He implied ones from chemist or pharmacy would be fine and to aim at the 1000mg per day. Now not questioning the human vs pet thing here. Mum will know no different but I am uneasy about the fact that all the capsules I have so far looked at online contain glycerol as a constituent of the capsule shell. Anyone know of glycerol free capsules?

Has he recommended an omega 3 supplement for her joints? I was under the impression that omega 3 and 6 is more for skin and coat than joints.
On the subject of capsules though, you don't need to feed the capsule itself. You can put the contents on the food and just discard the capsule as far as I know.

The ones I looked at said that you can pierce the capsule and squeeze the contents onto the food so I don't see why you couldn't do it with all capsules like that.
Ahh, of course. In which case, would the Dorwest Omega Star not be suitable?

Any fish oil capsules I have come across can be pierced and emptied. You could also add oily fish (tinned sardines) once or twice a week for some added omega 3.
Personally, I'd also suggest a good glucosamine and chondroitin supplement. Dorewest do tablets and I believe they have a sale on at the moment.

She has been on a joint supplement (cosequin) for many years. She has been having some tinned sardines or cooked salmon ever since she did her cruciate this sort of time last year. Unable to comment how often as I do not know.

Out of curiosity, what's wrong with the capsule shells? Alfie is on omega 3 oil capsules now too and I've been giving them whole - he takes them likes a treat and I hear him bite into them and make them pop, it makes me cringe! anyway, should I be piercing them and just giving contents?

No idea barley all's I know is that I was told to cut the capsule and empty liquid out. Must be something in the capsule shell that's not good maybe ? xx

The omega 3 supplements did not work for mums dog, gave her the squits! Gypsy is now having them as vet has recommenced she has an omega 3 supplement. I have decided to cut into them and emptying them out (quite messy really!) Need to find a better way than using a pair of scissors! TBH barley it probably does not matter. My uncertainty comes from the fact that the shell contains a chemical called glycerol. In a human supplement the source of the glycerol should be safe. It is a chemical often used in many dog treats to keep them soft and squidgy + helps prevent them going off as this explains www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk/dog-food-ingredients/0130/glycerin The original source of the chemical is important and if it is from china or a by product of bio-fuel industry then it might not be as great as all that as this article explains. www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-news/chinese-dog-treats-glycerin/Due to just being uncertain and not knowing enough about it I have generally tried to avoid when possible. I think capsule should help prevent the fish oil going rancid which can easily happen when using a bottle of fish oil. I have not decided what I will do once I have used the capsules up.

Could you not just pierce them with a needle caz2golden?

Anyone know which brands are better for salmon or fish oils?
Was looking at grizzly pollack and grizzly salmon oil but so far not found uk supplier (amazon its coming from US). I am thinking that wild fish oil will be better than farmed for omega 3 to 6 ratio. Most do not seem to mention if they are wild or farmed salmon oil!
Has anyone ever used krill oil with their dogs (antioxidant)?

The capsules are not really agreeing with my two either! ok for a couple of days but then have to miss a day otherwise I start going soft! I do not give if I give them fish in their main meal.
Any suggestions on quality of bottled fish oil and which company is best to go with?

I've heard good things about Grizzly salmon oil - and when I used to use it, I normally brought the Fish4Dogs one and had no complaints about that.
Shame the capsules aren't suiting them. I like capsules for ease as Alfie eats them straight down like a treat - whereas liquid oils get in his beard and I can never get the smell from his bowl no matter how well I wash it!
