So my black Labrador is quite old - 13 in march - and about 2/3 months ago we noticed he started acting strange which we think is dog dementia. However he keeps wanting to go out the back door (only ever in the evening/night when it's dark) and every time I've gone out there to see what he's doing he's either noticed me and come back inside or he's just standing there looking at nothing. It wouldn't bother me so much if it was warm outside but it's absolutely freezing and it makes me worried because I like I said he's old I don't want him to get ill. Has anyone else's dog done this? And do they know why? Please help!!

Sorry I can't help as I've never had a situation like this. Didn't lotsofcats have a similar situation with Aztec behaving strangely in old age? She might be able to help? Sorry if I've tagged unnecessarily, I'm sure someone will point out if I'm wrong!

Welcome to the forum linzzlou. I can't really help as no experience of this. A couple of thoughts that did come to mind:- Does he have any trouble passing urine or faeces? Does he want to go in the night & can't hence the odd behaviour? Did he used to go out at night before the odd behaviour out there? (based on odd behaviours of a cat who had kidney disease - not quite the same behaviour but there were changes in urination habits for a period) Also is his eyesight OK as with the dark, if it isn't, he could be disoriented.

Arrr so sorry to hear this dementia is so sad for humans and our beloved pets. My late dog had dementia she constantly licked the carpet and when she went outside she used to lick the concrete/walls / footpaths it was so sad I couldn't turn my back for one minute. I do know that there is medication that the vet can prescribe my friend's dog is on medication for dementia but for my late dog it wasn't the case she had to many other health problems going on. But I would definitely take your dog to get checked over by a vet and they may be able to prescribe something to help or give you some advice. Hope you go on ok .

It is a very critical situation and as you said it is freezing outside then I think to save your dog from getting ill, you must make sure that he will not go outside especially in dark. Also concern with a specialist doctor and discuss whats the matter.
