Sorry if this question is a bit TMI but what is a healthy cat poop meant to be like? Olive and Honey's are a very dark brown (almost black) colour in a long shape that's sometimes pebbled and they always smell very strongly. Not sure if this is healthy or not? I guess I'm just after some clarification because it'll be another trip to the vets if that isn't normal! Their diet consists of Applepaws and James Wellbeloved biscuits.

I think that sounds about okay, the food the cats eat will be responsible for the colour. Not that I think you go around poking at it!, but if it's really hard when pebbled then that could indicate constipation and/or not enough to drink.

Sounds about right.
Yarna's poo varies between dark and light brown according to the food recently eaten. There isn't much smell, but she has a mainly wet food diet (Purina Gourmet and Applaws fish in jelly).

Our cats deposit different styles & colours! Roman's is more dog sized - I suspect that when he goes out some poor dog walker gets the blame - sorry Normally mid-brown, firm but soft & very stinky! Lexie's is difficult to tell the colour as its usually very well covered in litter but is often stinky & about finger thickness. She has a sensitive stomach so can occasionally get affected by a change in food (often stolen!!) or stress & gets a bit of diarrhoea but that usually clears up very quickly without a vet visit. Penny's were very firm & despite her predilection for dried food we made sure she had moist food & if it got too dry we added water to her moist & sometmes gave her katalax if she was straining. She was good at hairballs proving how well she groomed herself & this could also pass through drying her poo as well. Here's were often not a straight sausage but more like a string of beads which could break into individual beads. If these were rock hard then it was a case of more moisture but often they had a hard outer & a soft inner which was OK. They were usually quite dark. As we use clumping litter that can dry out the poo, if it has been left for a while, so it can sometimes be difficult to tell. Osiris is a bit of a mystery - he insists on going out rather than using a litter tray so if we see anything its because he's being kept in which usually means he's on meds which can easily affect output!! However, jess, I think the 3 main criteria to decide on vet visits is whether it changes from normal, there is any blood in it or the cat is straining/not going over a few days.

Had to laugh at the description of poor Roman's poo tonib - exactly like Kiba-Khan's!! you would swear a dog had done it, and not just any dog, a German Shepherd at least, mountains of it! Also very stinky. Kali, Bramble and Kai Ruki are all very stinky. Kai Ruki tends to be messy and not very firm and he often misses some of the litter tray. Blackberry and Willow are not too smelly. Toffee goes outside - he doesn't like to use the litter tray but when he does he doesn't cover it up at all.

Sounds like both Roman & Kiba-Khan share a toilet habit, lotsofcats. I swear Roman saves it up to get the local large dogs to take the blame, although now he's more indoors its us that see it in the litter tray.

Ok all these poop descriptions are sounding pretty familiar so that's a relief! Is there any way to make them less smelly though? The smell is often so bad it goes right through the house or if done at night it'll wake me up

I know that smell jess! If you find the answer let me know. Although I do believe that the cat food eaten can really affect it, though which brand/variety is better for no smell compared to palatablity, I'm not sure.

My old cat Sam used to have a mainly dry food diet, and her poo stank. With Yarna, who has a 90% wet diet, there is very little smell. Her litter tray is located in the kitchen, and often I don't even know she has been on it until I actually look at the tray.

I can't get rid of it all together as the James Wellbeloved dry food has vitamins/nutrients that isn't in the Applepaws but I'll definitely try to reduce it if that helps with smell!

It'll bbe interesting to see what effect that has jess. Both Roman & Lexie are on about 50/50 dried & mmoist but Osiris is only on moist & we hardly evver see his poo so can't tell what its like.

Yarna mainly has the Purina Gourmet Solitaire (beef in tomato sauce and duck in tomato sauce) and Gold (chunks in gravy), both of which are complete foods. Every other day she has the Applaws tuna & salmon in jelly for breakfast. That isn't complete, but it is rich in Omega 3. She only has a very small amount (<10g) of Lilys Kitchen dried food per day.

Mine are on wet food with a bowl of dry always down 24/7. Phoebe's poop is firm and non-smelly: Loki is a little stinkbomb!!!!!! Doesn't help that he often doesn't bury it....usually when I'm out at work and Neil is home alone with them He has my poor hubby gagging and sending my abusive text messages about ''my bliddy smelly cats''

Tigger tends to leave stinky presents in the litter tray and she does not bury them, Ebony's the opposite - she tries to use the maximum amount of cat litter to bury her poop, the more cat litter the better <3
