Hi there
My vet has recommended that we bring our 10 week old puppy back to them to get a flea/worm treatment from them. However, I'd rather choose a flea/worm tablet/spot on lotion that I could use instead. It should be cheaper and it means I don't have to book appointments to go see the vet/nurse.
Does anyone have any recommendations for a decent flea/worm lotion or tablet that I can buy in a normal store/pet store? My vet said that Bob Martin can cause reactions in puppies. I'm not sure if this is true!
Any help is welcome!
Thanks

When was the puppy last de-wormed? Has your puppy seen the vet for first vaccinations? If you dont know what the breeder did with regard to worming puppy then please ask them as you need to know the date of the last worming and what was used. The breeders I have got my dogs from have always provided this information with the dogs papers in written form as well as telling me verbally. Mine were wormed at 8 weeks by the breeder so 10 weeks would be too soon for next dose! My vet gave me advocate on first puppy visit at about 8 1/2 weeks and I just held off using that till the next dose was due at 12 weeks. From memory (might be worth confirming with your vet) the usual worm schedule for puppy is 2,4,6 and 8 weeks done by breeder then 12 weeks and 16 weeks done by yourself. Then you can go to the usual schedule for adult dog i.e every 3 months. I think both my dogs when they were puppies were on milbemax de-worming tablets. These are prescription from vet. I have used Granofen, Panacur and Drontal without prescription on adult dogs. I dont de-worm regularly now, relying on a digestive supplement to help but would buy the ones I have used before again if I thought my dogs had a digestive system parasite issue. I dont use a chemical de-flea product so can not advise on when a puppy would be due for that. Hope others can advise on these products. What I would say is if you are going to use a de-wormer or de-flea product then get advice from vets as to what is effective. Many over the counter products that you can get from pet shops with regard to fleas just are no longer effective as the fleas have built up a resistance to them. There are products like Drontal that vets sell as they are good worming product but you can get elsewhere cheaper. From personal experience of what my mum uses Frontline Combo (i.e the prescription one) is no longer effective against ticks. It is well know Frontline (the one you get from a pet shop or similar) is no longer effective for fleas. I have heard some scary stories over the tablet forms of flea treatments i.e products like Bravecto that I would probably would not now use unless my dog actually had a big problem with fleas. I would not use Bob Martin product. If I remember rightly this thread was about the Bob Martin spot on and the dog in question was not a puppy yourpetforums.co.uk/thread/8358/warning (unfortunately picture link no longer working). I am sure migsy will be along to confirm this.

I would say if its a puppy its best to get the best you can from a vet for now. Once you know puppy is having no reactions to say Drontal or Frontline Combi or whatever you decide to go with, then you can just collect from the vets, that's what I do, no appointment needed .
Good luck with the pup

Certain breeds of dog (usually the herding breeds i.e Rough collies, Australian Shepard's, border collies, OES etc) you need to take extra care with as they are more prone to having reactions to the chemicals used in de-flea and de-worm products. Pawsforthought can advise more on this if required. Obviously I have no idea on the breed of your puppy but thought this was also worth mentioning just in case it is relevant.

Good advice from caz2golden;Whichever you are thinking of choosing, please go online and find out if anyone has had problems.I can't remember if it was on here or a local dog forum, but a dog actually died from a worming/flea treatment bought from a pet shop, the owners vet said it shouldn't be on the market. There was even a photo of the offending treatment.
