Hi all does anyone have any experience of biotin tablets? Was hoping maybe gypsy could advise?!
As you may remember Dotty has onychodystropy, autoimmune disease where her body attacks her nails and she's losing nails and risk of secondary infections. At the moment she takes onychotin biotin and salmon oil daily for this, it's certainly not as bad as some of the horror stories I've seen out there but she's still losing 1-2 nails every month. And now coming into winter again I want to try and minimise risk of infection. After speaking with vet at her last check up I suggested nutramega, biotin levels of 5mg as opposed to 2.5 in onychotin. The price is double what she currently gets but to be fair that's not a bother, and I could maybe claim it back on insurance. What I'm wondering is whether or not I could double her current intake, so she effectively gets 5mg, as opposed to starting nutramega. Price would work out roughly to be the same if doubling up onychotin. Does biotin have a cumulative effect? She was doing okay before, still losing nails but only maybe one every 2 months, but I know that if the condition is managed properly then *hopefully* she shouldn't lose any nails.
Any advice appreciated. Oh and I should add I'll be popping into vets by end of week to ask. If I can't double up onychotin then I'll mover her onto nutramega, vet prescribed only.
Ps just as an interesting wee side note last time I was at vets and asking about nutramega the vet told me she had heard good things and they currently have a guide dog with the same condition which is managed well with nutramega
