Recently mum went on holiday with her dog to a tick prone area. Before she went she used Frontline combo on her dog. About a week ago my brother and I found 3+ ticks on mums dog. What was slightly concerning was ticks were still alive! This implies the chemical spot on treatment is not working! We put it down to her picking the ticks up on holiday.
However just found another one on her!! Its now 2 weeks since the holiday ended. Tick was alive again!
Seems too long now since holiday to be from then so obviously we have source in the garden for them! She has only been on short lead walks up the lane of late and there does not seem to be much livestock about at present.
Mum is looking into alternative product at the moment its either a tick collar (think it was called Seresto) or Advantix spot on. Anyone had any luck using either of these with regard to ticks?
Strange thing is so far (touch wood fast) my two dont seem to have had any ticks on them. I have not used any chemical treatments on them, they are not getting any supplements that particularly would act as a repellent, but they have been bathed once or twice this summer with skinny dip shampoo (CSJ product) that has a repelling action! They are in the sea regularly but have no idea if that helps with regard to ticks! They are the ones who have been walked on headland with livestock, been walking in wooded / lakeside location where given a chance will roll in fox and badger scat and Phoebe rolled on dead gannet only a few days ago! i.e they are going places you perhaps would expect to have a higher risk of ticks. In all honesty in the many years we have lived here we have never had a tick issue, it just does not seem that tick prone an area!
I know mums dog is older 13 compared to my two who are 8 and 5 but she is probably in better health than my two i.e mine with their allergies, Gypsy with the pancreatitis etc. Why would one dog seem to be more prone to getting ticks than another?
